Work with lasers can be hazardous if proper precautions are not taken. TheÌýLaser Safety Program outlines the responsibilities of those working with lasers; and the procedures and controlsÌýthat must be implemented before starting the work.ÌýThis program ensures that risks to those working with or near lasers is minimized.

Laser permits
The Laser Safety Program is a permit-based program. Before working with a class 3BÌýor 4 laser, a laser permit is required.Ìý
To add a new laser to the permit system, fill out . Note that detailed specifications, a completed risk assessment, an SOP and a manual are required to complete the form. Templates are available on this page. ContactÌýlaser@uwaterloo.caÌýfor more information.ÌýÌý
To maintain an existing permit:

Training
All workers must complete the following online and practical training. PI's are responsible for verifyingÌýtraining and storing records.

Hands onÌýtraining developed and provided by the laboratory supervisor. This practical training consistsÌýof the following components:
- Laser operation as described in the manufacturer's laser operation manual
- Alignment procedures
- Standard Operating Procedure templateÌý
- Laser Risk Assessments
