UW Psychology Study featured in CBC News

The University of ݮƵ will take part in a five-year study on e-cigarettes to determine the impact of regulations in different parts of the world.

"It's extraordinarily important for us to understand the factors that are driving people to smoke, and what we can do through policies and regulations to reduce that amount globally," said Geoffrey Fong, a professor of psychology and public health at the Ontario university.

Kathy Hay earned her BA with a major in Psychology in 1998 —but it wasn’t a straight line from start to finish. Beginning her undergrad studies in 1979, she paused university to pursue a career in banking. Nearly 20 years later she completed her degree through ݮƵ’s distance learning option. Now as a former banker, Kathy has brought a strategic and business lens to her roles in the not-for-profit charitable sector.

Geoffrey Fong, founder and chief principal investigator of the ITC Project,is co-leading the grant’s national cohort studies of adult smokers, vapers, and dual users (for example, those who both smoke and vape) in the U.S., Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and South Korea—countries that have very different approaches to cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and other new nicotine products, such as heated tobacco products.

On Wednesday, December 1st,Sydney Waring, Aleece Katan, Tyler Eschenwecker and Jasmine Zhang presented an excellent and engaging workshop on Mental Health 101 to individuals working in the legal profession including lawyers, paralegals, law clerks and assistants. The event was hosted by the ݮƵ Region Law Society. 47 participants were in attendance for the talk, held over Zoom.

Geoffrey T. Fong is an acclaimed psychologist whose research focuses on combining psychological theories and research methods with traditional epidemiological survey methods to evaluate the impact of tobacco control policies on entire populations in countries. He is the founder and Chief Principal Investigator of the International Tobacco Control Policy Evaluation Project and a member of the Royal Society of Canada, Canadian Academy of Health Sciences and the Association for Psychological Science.

A recently publishedresearch paperauthored by UW professor of PsychologyDr. Igor Grossmann and colleagues, entitled, explores and examinesthe meaning of mindfulness in three parts: analyses of the semantic meaning of the term mindfulness in the English language, meta-analysis of the results from a widely used mindfulness measure, and empirical tests of association with markers of wisdom and effective emotion regulation.

Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs (GSPA), in collaboration with the Graduate Student Association (GSA), established this award to recognize exemplary faculty members who have demonstrated excellence in graduate student supervision, through being a mentor, advisor, role model, humanist and a strategist who exemplifies a high level of energy and ingenuity.

ݮƵ Psychology Professor Dr. Igor Grossmann invites colleagues and students to attend the free , hosted virtually at UݮƵ on October 11 (Thanksgiving Monday). With more than 400 registered academics and interested scholars, this is the biggest scientific event exploring wisdom and its relationship to morality and culture.
