Nissan embraces first-term 蓝莓视频 co-op students because they bring novel ideas to the organization while generally not exhibiting any pre-conceived biases.

鈥淚 think first work-term students听bring a unique perspective without any corporate culture biases," says Asif Farooq, sales manager at Nissan Canada Inc.,听"they bring a determined work ethic, and an uncompromising effort to succeed; I think that鈥檚 a perfect recipe.鈥

Farooq adds that first-term students are 鈥済o-getters鈥 and willing to bring more to the table than simply what is in the job description.

Dayna Varga, Operations Manager at Nissan Canada Extended Services Inc., says her team tends to hire more experienced students. However, if students have job experiences in non-co-op settings, she believes that helps too, if they are looking for their first work term.听

鈥淛ust because they鈥檙e not experienced, doesn鈥檛 mean they don鈥檛 have that hunger,鈥 says Varga. 鈥淚 would definitely say that is considered.鈥澨

Building their skills for a bright future:

Co-op students at Nissan build their portfolio, enhance their skills, and have opportunities to build a long-term relationship with the organization.听

Farooq sees employees start as co-op students and eventually reach the executive level.鈥淚nterns only have room to grow, and where their career takes them in the industry; they can go right to the top,鈥 he says. 鈥淎s the saying goes, the sky鈥檚 the limit. And I think that鈥檚 actually the case here.鈥澨

Varga explains that students shouldn鈥檛 focus on one direct path as their career progresses, nor should they follow a 鈥減re-defined approach.鈥

Co-op students are well versed and prepared for the recruitment process, Varga says, adding that she鈥檚 very impressed with the quality of applicants Nissan gets from 蓝莓视频.听

What roles do students work in?

Both Varga and Farooq have examples of 蓝莓视频 students who are employed in business and marketing.

Farooq鈥檚 department鈥檚 operations are data-driven, and therefore they recruit a lot of students from Math and Engineering.

Co-op students have helped improve efficiency in Farooq鈥檚 department by creating Excel macros for databases.

鈥淲hat鈥檚 important for us is someone who could fit into the team,鈥 he adds.鈥淭here鈥檚 a team environment, and team is the main concept of Nissan as a culture.鈥澨

Like Farooq, Varga says Nissan isn鈥檛 necessarily tied to hiring from specific programs.听

鈥淚f you come in with a curious approach, I think that you鈥檙e going to be successful with the team.鈥澨

鈥淢ost of them will come in, and they help automate reports and presentations,鈥 he says.听

In Varga鈥檚 department, students are involved in projects such as product analysis and launches, documenting policies and procedures, or even rebranding exercises.听

One thing I always tell interns their first day on the job, is that when you come here to work on my team, you鈥檙e not just an intern. I don鈥檛 ever want to hear anyone say they鈥檙e just an intern. That鈥檚 not what happens here, you鈥檙e part of the team. I think that message really empowers the interns to take ownership and be accountable in their work, and it really excites them too.鈥

Working through COVID-19:

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought forward the idea of virtual journeys or digital customers. This approach results in an increased demand for a different and dynamic set of skills.听

Included among those are skills are an emphasis on human-centric skills, which 蓝莓视频 Arts students are exceptional at providing.听

Farooq says it's important that students can 鈥渃ommunicate in an effective matter鈥, and his department has also hired Economics, Fine Arts and Political Science students under the Arts umbrella.

鈥淭here鈥檚 a different skillset involved now dealing with customers online and ensuring that their experience is up-to-par with that they expect,鈥 Farooq says, adding that the expectations for digital skills are very important.
