Matt Rendall (BASc '08, Mtron; MBET '09), co-founder and CEO of Clearpath Robotics, is a finalist in the Young Entrepreneur category of the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year Award, which honours Canada's leading entrepreneurs from all areas of business.ÌýÌýRendall's company develops and manufactures unmanned vehicles used for autonomous vehicle research and data collection on land and sea.

Three members of À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµ's electrical and computer engineering departmentÌýreceived the best paper award at the 2013 Languages, Compilers and Tools for Embedded Systems (LCTES 2013) conference held June 20-21Ìýin Seattle, Washington.Ìý The paper was authored by Sebastian Fischmeister and Anwar Hasan, both professors in the department, andÌý °ä²¹°ù±ô´Ç²õÌýMoreno, who was a doctoral candidateÌýwhen the paper wasÌýsubmitted.ÌýTheir winning entry is entitled Non-Intrusive Program Tracing and Debugging of Deployed Embedded Systems Through Side-Channel Analysis.Ìý

Susan Tighe, a civil engineering professor and the Canada Research Chair in Pavement and Infrastructure Management, was interviewed July 4 on CBC radio about the latest research taking place by À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµ engineersÌýto improve the quality ofÌýconcrete and asphalt pavement roads.Ìý

Mahesh Tripunitara, an electrical and computer engineering professor, andÌýAlireza Sharifi, anÌýECE doctoral candidateÌýcaptured the best paper award at the ACM Symposium on Access Control Models and Technologies.Ìý The symposium took place June 12-14 in Amsterdam.

A million electric cars could be on roads across North America before the end of the decade with the help of research by a teamÌýthat includes Zhongwei Chen, a À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµÌýchemical engineering professor, the United States Department of Energy and Los Alamos National Laboratory. ChenÌýis part of a team led by the Los Alamos National Laboratory looking to develop non-precious materials to replace the expensive platinum catalysts in fuel cells.

School of Architecture students won major awards at this year's Steel Structure Education Foundation (SSEF) student design competition entitled Pop Up. TheÌýAward of Excellence went to Gabriella den Elzen and James Clarke-Hicks and the Award of Merit went to Jim Shi and Logan Steele.The students'Ìýprojects were a required submission for Arch 113 and Arch 173.Ìý

OnÌýJune 15, 1,358 À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµ Engineering graduatesÌýreceived degrees in two convocation ceremonies. Among the award recipients were Duane Cronin of mechanical and mechatronics engineering who was honoured withÌýa Distinguished Teacher Award, and Jonathan Eyolfson of electrical and computer engineering who received theÌýAmit and Meena Chakma Award for Exceptional Teaching by a Student. The Alumni Gold Medal was awarded to Zachary Robert Gowanlock and the Governor General's Silver Medal went to Steven Derek Yang.
