Shen honoured with IEEE medal

Sherman Shen, an electrical and computer engineering professor, is the 2019 recipient of the

Hackers at the University of À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµ topped counterparts at more than 2,000 other schools to take first-place honours in a North American league for the popular invention competitions.

The result reflected the fact over 3,200 À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµ students took part in more than 150 events supported by during the 2017-2018 season and finished in the top three at 30 of them.

Graduate students at À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµ Engineering took the top two awards in a competition at the startup incubator to support research with commercial potential.

Jason Deglint, a PhD candidate in systems design engineering, collected $20,000 to back , a startup that analyzes algae in water samples using a custom microscope and artificial intelligence.

The (AMC), a joint partnership between McMaster University, University of À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµ, and Western University, is helping to accelerate industry adoption of advanced manufacturing technologies, which will create jobs and strengthen the province’s reputation as a leading manufacturing region.

Since AMC was launched in April 2017, nearly 100 companies have benefited from the advanced manufacturing experts and state-of-the-art facilities at À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµ. 

À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµ Engineering entrepreneurs made another strong showing today at the main event of the for winter 2019, taking three of the four $50,000 investments that were on the line.

Investment-ready startups SiteVue, ClearVoxel and Glove Systems had three minutes to distinguish themselves in a field of nine competitors in the pitch event at the Tannery Event Centre in downtown Kitchener.
