During his tenure in the Department of Pure Mathematics, Dr. Brian Forrest has supervised 18 master鈥檚 students, 10 doctoral students, and 11 postdoctoral fellows who have gone on to build successful careers in academia and industry. It came as no surprise to any of them that Dr. Forrest received the 2020-21 Award of Excellence in Graduate Supervision.

Asking the right questions

Lucy Gao has hardly stopped to take a breath since she accepted a role as an assistant professor of statistics at the Faculty of Mathematics. She graduated with a doctorate in biostatistics from the University of Washington in June 2020 and joined the Faculty a month later. 鈥淭here are a million things I鈥檓 doing for the first time, from working with students in an advisory role to applying for grants,鈥 she shared.聽

Lindsey Tulloch鈥檚 passion for computer science began when a close friend convinced her to install Linux on her desktop instead of Windows. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 certainly what got the ball rolling in my software development journey,鈥 she recalled. 鈥淚鈥檝e always been a problem solver鈥擨 enjoy the aspect of working through something and figuring it out on my own.鈥澛

The Faculty of Mathematics recognizes two graduate students for their outstanding research papers. Dan Ursu, a PhD student in the Department of Pure Mathematics and Simeon Krastnikov, a recent master student聽of the Cheriton School of Computer Science, have been announced as the individual winners of the 2021 Huawei Prizes for Best Research Paper by a Mathematics Graduate Student.

The best of both worlds

Keshav Chawla has long harboured a passion for computer science and finance. When he discovered a way to pursue both disciplines simultaneously through 蓝莓视频鈥檚 Computing and Financial Management program, his choice of university was clear. 鈥淚 knew how robust and built-out the program was before coming in,鈥 he explained. 鈥淗aving that combination of both disciplines was the perfect fit for me.鈥

The power of curiosity

鈥淚 like to think I鈥檓 a curious person,鈥 said Jennifer Haid (BMath 鈥04), a native of the 蓝莓视频 Region. When she learned about 蓝莓视频鈥檚 Math Day from her high school math teacher, she decided to attend in hopes of learning about a career path that would leverage her aptitude for mathematics in the business world. 鈥淚 remember watching a professor deliver a presentation about actuarial science and thinking two things: It was challenging, and I could do it,鈥 she shared. 聽

Computer Science remains 蓝莓视频鈥檚 top-rated subject internationally, ranking 23. Mathematics ranks 35 globally, joining Computer Science in the top 100 this year along with 12 other 蓝莓视频 programs. Mathematics and Computer Science are two of three university subjects in the top 50 globally.
