Jack Farlow, a second-year biomedical engineering student, has achieved a remarkable feat by qualifying for the 2023 CrossFit Games - a multi-day competition that brings together elite athletes from around the world to compete for the title of Fittest on Earth.

After two previous attempts, making it to the semifinals each time, Farlow secured his spot in to compete in this years’ finals taking place August 3 to 6 in Madison, Wisconsin. He stands out as the only student participant and the second youngest contender among the 40 competitors in the finals.

One of the greatest threats to the health of the Great Lakes is the increasing frequency of algal blooms, occurring in response to excess nutrients in the water due to a warming climate.

In response to the urgent need to better understand and mitigate human impacts on water quality, Dr. Nandita Basu, a civil and environmental engineering professor and Canada Research Chair in Global Water Sustainability and Ecohydrology, has been awarded a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Alliance grant for one such approach.

Dr. Michael Tam, a chemical engineering professor and University Research Chair, was announced as the inaugural deputy editor of a cutting-edge new journal that will publish novel and globally relevant original research dedicated to advancing the United Nations' sustainable development goals. 

Tam will lead the 's (ACS) new journal , which will feature emerging technologies that close the loop using various processes to convert natural and waste resources into useful intermediates and products. The journal begins accepting submissions on July 12, 2023, and aims to publish its first edition in January 2024.

Systems design engineering professor Dr. Alexander Wong was recently announced as a new Royal Society of Medicine fellow.

The “Kids on Campus: Imagining Your Future Self in STEM" program extends engineering education to younger audiences in an equitable fashion. Through on-campus experiences, diverse groups of young school children are immersed in a variety of STEM-focused activities that inspire them to envision themselves as future professionals in the field.

The University of À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ has secured $345,000 from the Ontario government to run three outreach projects designed to connect the next generation of workers to the province’s growing automotive sector.

Delivered by the University’s Faculty of Engineering, these projects form part of the Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network’s (OVIN) Regional Future Workforce (RFW) program. The projects will engage young and underrepresented students from diverse backgrounds with activities focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects and introduce them to potential career paths in the automotive industry.

A À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ Engineering professor has recently been awarded a prestigious prize for his contributions to Canadian telecommunications research.

Dr. En-Hui Yang, an electrical and computer engineering professor and Canada Research Chair in information theory, is the 2023 recipient of the Canadian Award for Telecommunications Research, an elite biennial award presented by the Canadian Society of Information Technology. He is the third University of À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ recipient since the award was established three decades ago.

Autonomous airline Ribbit has signed a $1.3 million contract with Transport Canada to start testing its commercial cargo aircraft to deliver goods to northern Canada, starting in 2024. 

À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ Engineering alumnus and company co-founder Jeremy Wang (PhD '22, mechanical engineering) says the concept behind Ribbit is fairly straightforward. The company converts small aircrafts from pilot-flown, to self-flying by removing back passenger seats and adding in the appropriate software and hardware.
