Anik Islam grew up in Dhaka, Bangladesh, a city of millions, with a mother whose fame meant every time they left their home, they were swarmed by her adoring fans. On June 15, it will be Islam’s turn to be on stage when he graduates on the dean's honour listÌýfrom À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµ's electrical engineering program. His number-one fan in the crowd will be his mother — renowned Bangladeshi film superstar, Babita.

The University of À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµ Robotics team came within a hair's breadth of successfully completing the Level 1 of the Sample Return Robot Challenge, a part of NASA's Centennial Challenges prize program.

The event, hosted by Worcester Polytechnic Institute from June 5-7 in Worcester, Mass., drew robotics teams from the United States, Canada and Estonia to compete for a total of $1.5 million in NASA prize money.

Musa Chunge, who will convocate with a BASc inÌýcivil engineering next month, has beenÌýawarded a Gates Cambridge Scholarship, which is one of the most prestigious international scholarships.ÌýÌýÌý

Chunge was one of 51 recipients out of more than 3,500 applicants who were evaluated on criteria such as outstanding intellectual ability, leadership potential, commitment to improving the lives of others, and a good fit between the applicant's qualifications and aspirations and the postgraduate program at Cambridge for which the individual applied.

A team of undergraduate students comprised mainly of À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµ Engineering studentsÌýwon an international microrobotics competition, andÌý did so in less than one second.

The Mobile Microrobotics Challenge took place at the International Conference on Robotics and Automation in Karlsruhe, Germany. The À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµ team won the Autonomous Mobility Challenge, where the microrobots must autonomously navigate a track in the shape of a figure eight.

Emily Peat, owner of EcoPlace Organics, took topÌýhonours at the Nicol Entrepreneurial Awards competitionÌýheld in OttawaÌýMarch 27. This is the first time in six years that the University of À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµ has taken the top prize at the national competition.

Peat, a current civil engineering undergraduate student andÌýformer University of À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµ BET300 and E Co-op program participant, captured theÌýaward after winning first place in a campus-wide competition held in FebruaryÌýat the Conrad Centre.

Engineering students dominatedÌýtheÌýUniversity of À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµ men’s curling teamÌýthat earned national goldÌýwith a 7-5 victory over the University of Alberta Golden Bears in Kamloops, B.C.

Skip Jake Walker, a fourth-year electrical engineering student, second Jordan Moreau, a management engineering student, thirdÌýEdward Cyr, a mechanical engineering master's student,Ìýand alternate Nathan Ransom, an undergraduate mechanical engineering student,Ìýand other members of the team, captured top spot in the 2013ÌýMen’s Curling Championship in a rematch of last year's finals.

Engineering honours its own

The 2012 À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµ Engineering Awards dinnerÌýheld onÌýNovember 22 honoured engineering's exceptional students, alumni and a friend of the faculty. More than 2,500 students received awards this year for everything from top marks to extracurricular activities such as leadership, community engagement, and involvement in athletics.

Devon Rizzo, a second-year management engineering student,Ìýcaptured the women's title at the Canadian University/College Championship onÌýJune 1 atÌýthe Cordova Bay Golf Course in Victoria, B.C.ÌýGarrett Rank, aÌýuÀ¶Ý®ÊÓÆµ economics student,Ìýwon theÌýmen'sÌýtitle.Ìý

BothÌýÀ¶Ý®ÊÓÆµÌýWarriors won in thrilling fashion with RizzoÌýtakingÌýthe title on the third playoff hole while Rank birdied four of his last six holes to win the championship by three strokes.
