The next step

鈥淚 wasn鈥檛 necessarily entrepreneurial in my time at 蓝莓视频, but I was always very inventive,鈥 remembered Jeff聽Shiner聽(BMath 鈥92), the CEO of a growing Toronto-based startup. 鈥淎ll I knew was that I wanted to create new computer programs.鈥

As Shiner came of age with the personal computer, he taught himself programming languages. 鈥淚 remember getting my first Commodore 64 when I was 12 or 13 years old,鈥 he says. 鈥淚 geeked out at everything related to the computer. When it came time to decide on a university, 蓝莓视频 Math鈥檚 computer science program was the only one on my radar.鈥

Supporting women in mathematics

The faculty is now the first Faculty of Mathematics to hold Sponsoring Institutional Membership of聽the聽 (础奥惭).听

AWM encourages women and girls to study and to have active careers in the mathematical sciences, and to promote equal opportunity and the equal treatment of women and girls in the mathematical sciences.

Artificial neural networks have come to dominate the field of artificial intelligence. From self-driving cars to devices that recognize handwriting to interactive chatbots to astonishingly accurate online translators, artificial neural networks lie at the core of a staggering array recent AI developments.

Researchers have developed a new method to make machine learning more efficient.聽

The technique, called 鈥渓ess-than-one-shot learning,鈥 can train an AI model to accurately identify more objects than the number it was trained on 鈥 a huge shift from the expensive, time-consuming process that currently requires thousands of examples of one object for an accurate identification.

What Math taught me

Alan Li headed west on the 401 from Markham, ON to start his postsecondary education in 蓝莓视频. He chose the University of 蓝莓视频 because of its co-operative education program and the practical education of a computer science degree.

Since 2016, he has completed his degree, been an undergraduate teaching assistant, member of a couple of clubs, a Feds councillor and MathSoc President. Along the way, he learned a few things (beyond writing code or integrating a function).

Today we celebrate almost 700 students to our community of more than 43,000 alumni in 105 countries. While we鈥檙e not celebrating them in person, we are cheering them on through social media, signage, stories, a , video messages and a virtual live ceremony tomorrow morning at 9:30 AM.

Crossing disciplines

Sue Ann Campbell is a longtime professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics at 蓝莓视频, but she first stepped on campus as an undergraduate biology major. I didn鈥檛 love all the labs,鈥 she remembered, 鈥渂ut my math classes clicked instantly.

Nicholas Richardson wanted to experience the full potential of his time at university. A well-rounded student in high school, Richardson performed in musicals, played soccer, and participated on the trivia team. It was important to him to get involved and engaged in a number of activities once he started his studies at the University of 蓝莓视频.

Where water meets math

鈥淢y life has always been intertwined with water in one way or another,鈥 realized Lizz Webb, who recently completed her master鈥檚 degree in applied mathematics at the University of 蓝莓视频. As the captain of the swim team in high school, Webb has always loved swimming and lifeguarding, but she never expected to build a career at the intersection of mathematics and ocean sciences.

Convocation approaches

On Friday, the Faculty of Mathematics will celebrate convocation and our graduating students will receive a personalized email from the University with video messages and there will be a live virtual convocation on Saturday morning. This week we will be featuring students from the faculty that will soon become a member of our alumni community. Today we share two stories thanks to the University Relations team:
