In the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, ensuring a safe and healthy workplace is our top priority. To support this, all employees must complete mandatory health and safety training provided by the University of À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµ.
Below you will find a comprehensive list of training modules. Please review carefully to determine which courses you are required to complete. This list may change over time—it is your responsibility to stay up to date with current requirements.
Training for All Staff
All Staff: This includes faculty, administrative and technical personnel, research staff, casual employees, co-op students, and others working within the department. All are required to complete the following training.

Employee Safety Orientation (SO1001)
An overview of employee rights, responsibilities, workplace hazards, and safety protocols. -
WHMIS 2015 (SO2017)
Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System training for safe handling of hazardous materials. -
Workplace Violence & Harassment Awareness (SO1081)
Training on recognizing, preventing, and responding to workplace violence and harassment.-
University of À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµ employees who are managing people in some degree of crisis (e.g., anxious students, upset customers, people having a tough day) should consider completing Verbal De-escalation (SO1181).

Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) Training (OPD102)
Ensures compliance with accessibility standards to create an inclusive environment. -
Cyber Awareness Essentials
Core cybersecurity, data privacy, and information security training. -
Cyber Awareness for Knowledge Workers
Specialized cybersecurity training for knowledge workers.

Additional Hazard-Specific Training for Access
All faculty, staff, students, and visitors must meet certain safety requirements before being granted access to research labs. Depending on your research activities, you may be required to complete further training such as biosafety, chemical handling, radiation safety, and more.
Please consult your supervisor/host for specific requirements.
Note: It is the responsibility of supervisor/host to ensure that employees, students, and volunteers receive training that is appropriate to the hazards present in their area of work/study.
Note: Supervisors may modify and use the Training Matrix which outlines the training required based on the role and the hazards present in the workplace.Â
Training for Graduate Students, Postdoctoral Fellows, Research Assistants, Research Associates, and Faculty
All graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, research assistants, research associates, and faculty must complete:

Training for Supervisors
In addition to the mandatory training for all staff, individuals in supervisory roles are required to complete the following specialized courses:
- Supervisor Safety Orientation (SO1100)
Training on supervisors’ responsibilities in maintaining a safe work environment. - Risk Assessment (SO2500)
Training on identifying and mitigating workplace hazards. - Incident Investigation (SO1012) (for high-risk areas)
Guidance on investigating workplace incidents. - Inspecting the Workplace (SO1007) (for high-risk areas)
Training on conducting workplace safety inspections. -
Supervisors are recommended to take Safety Spectrum Orientation (SO1101) which shows participants how to use the Safety Spectrum software to manage incident and hazard reporting and investigation. Supervisors should review your employees' health and safety training compliance in Safety Spectrum, and encourage them to plan for completing any expired training.

Training for Teaching Assistants
In addition to mandatory training for all staff, teaching assistants may need to complete specific safety training before they are authorized to work in their assigned courses. When applying for a teaching assistantship, students will receive an email outlining any outstanding training requirements and instructions on how to complete them.
All teaching assistants are also required to complete the ExpecTAtions teaching assistant training. Students will be invited to self-register for ExpecTAtions_FOE through their department contact.
