Mental Health Resources

IN RESIDENCE RESOURCES

Residence Life DonÌý–ÌýUndergraduate Communities

Dons areÌýupper-year studentsÌýthat live with you in residence. They have first-hand experience of the highs and lows of university life. Dons are trained in Emergency First Aid and mental health crisis response. Talk to your Donwhen you need:Ìý

  • Support transitioning to campus and university lifeÌý
  • Emergency assistance, includingÌýfor aÌýmental health crisis, for yourself or a friendÌý
  • Managing stressful responsibilities or situations such as a roommate conflict
  • Help meeting others in the communityÌý

Residence Life Don-Graduate and Family CommunitiesÌý

Grad Dons are graduate student leaders who live in Columbia LakeÌýVillage (CLV)Ìýand support the CLV Graduate & Student Family Community.ÌýÌý

Talk to your DonÌýwhen you need:

  • Support transitioning to campus and university lifeÌý
  • Emergency assistance, includingÌýfor aÌýmental health crisis, for yourself or a friendÌý
  • Managing stressful responsibilities or situations such as a roommate conflict
  • Help meeting others in the communityÌý

Duty StaffÌý

DutyÌýstaff are available overnight from 8 p.m. - 8 a.m., 7 days a week. DutyÌýstaff receive training in crisis response, including supporting students through mental health emergencies. Call aÌýdutyÌýstaff at any time overnight if:Ìý

  • You or a friend in residence needs any type of emotional or medical supportÌý
  • You need to talk to someone about anything at all, including feeling lonely, homesick, or unsafeÌý

Call the Duty Staff numbers posted in your community, or you can call from your Front Desk.Ìý

Residence Life CoordinatorsÌý

Residence Life Co-ordinators (RLCs) are full-time professional staff on-call 24 /7.ÌýSome of them live on campus and are available to respond quickly.Ìý

Your RLC is trained to support you with any level of emergency, including mental health support. You can meet with your RLC for any reason at allÌýincluding:Ìý

  • If you need support gaining access to resources on campusÌý
  • If you are finding yourself struggling to maintain balance and self-careÌý
  • If you feel unsafe for any reasonÌýÌý

Front Desk AssistantsÌý

Front Desk Assistants (FDAs) areÌýupper yearsÌýthat work at the Front Desk of every residence building. They are trained to be your one-stop-shop for any support you need. Talk to an FDA when you need:Ìý

  • Information on accessing a campus resourceÌý
  • Help with personal or academic stressÌý
  • Support with any level of emergencyÌý

FDAs are great listeners, and they love when students pop by the Front Desk with questions. Visit your Front Desk or viewÌýtheirÌýcontact information here.Ìý

Counsellor in ResidenceÌý

Counselling support is available to helpÌýyouÌýmonitor, manage,ÌýandÌýmaintain a balanced life. Our Counsellors inÌýResidence meetÌýwith students from all over campus in both of their office locations: MKV Residence and Needles Hall. Ìý

To access any counsellor, you must first register on main campus at Needles Hall. Talk to your Don or visitÌýCounselling ServicesÌýtoday if you have questions.Ìý


Safety in ResidenceÌý

We know that aÌýsignificantÌýfactorÌýin enjoying your academic and personal university experienceÌýis feeling safe where you live.ÌýOur staff is consistentlyÌýworking toÌýupdate our spaces, policies, and supportsÌýwith your safety in mind.Ìý

Here is a list of a few things we’re doing to keep you safe:Ìý

  • Residence Safety and Security Infrastructure Advisory Committee (RSSIAC)Ìýcomprised of members from Housing, the Safety Office, and Campus Police, uses student feedback toÌýimproveÌýour spaces. They alsoÌýconductÌýbiannual safety walks to identify possible safety issues aroundÌýallÌýour residence buildings. These issues are addressed promptly (e.g.,Ìýlights that need to be replaced along walkways)Ìý
  • After Hours Maintenance teamÌýinspect and repair facilities as neededÌý
  • An annual Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) auditÌýconductedÌýannuallyÌý
  • On-call residence staff available 24/7

Ways that you can help keep our community safe:Ìý

  • Follow latest public health guidelinesÌýÌý
  • Report unsafe conditions in or around our residence buildings to a Housing staff memberÌý
  • Do not prop doorsÌýopen orÌýallow people into residence if they are not personally known to you
  • If you lose your keys, notify your residence Front Desk immediatelyÌý
