Progress Highlights

1. Environmental Management System, developed and implemented, 2024

St. Jerome鈥檚 University, as a Catholic post-secondary leader, has developed and deployed an Environmental Management System which is guided by Pope Francis鈥Laudato si听(May 24, 2015), 鈥...the earth herself, burdened and laid waste, is among the most abandoned and maltreated of our poor...鈥 (Laudato Si, 2015).

SJU's EMS will be guided by a comprehensive Environmental Policy, which sets forth the university's commitment to reducing its environmental footprint and promoting sustainability across all operations. This policy is supported by a series of objectives and targets that address key environmental aspects, such as energy use, waste management, and resource conservation.

Continuous improvement is to be embedded in SJU鈥檚 EMS through a rigorous review and improvement process. Regular internal audits, performance evaluations, and management reviews are conducted to ensure the system remains effective and aligned with the university鈥檚 environmental objectives. Feedback from stakeholders will be actively sought and used to drive enhancements, fostering a culture of ongoing environmental excellence.

Overall, SJU鈥檚 EMS represents a structured and dynamic approach to environmental management, reflecting the university鈥檚 dedication to sustainability and responsible environmental practices. Through its commitment to legal compliance, risk management, and continuous improvement, SJU is well-positioned to meet current and future environmental challenges while promoting a sustainable future for its community.

2. Environmental Sustainability Policy, adopted April 2025

Policy Statement

St. Jerome's University (St. Jerome鈥檚 or the University) is committed to environmental stewardship and sustainable development, as demonstrated through its implementation of an Environmental Management System (EMS) compliant with ISO 14001:2015 standards. This Policy supports the EMS and sets forth the University鈥檚 commitment to reducing its environmental footprint and promoting sustainability across all operations.

3. Earth Day co-tree planting with REEP (newsletter attached to e-mail)

An Earth Day (2025) tree planting was co-undertaken with REEP Green Solutions, an environmental charity that has been helping people in 蓝莓视频 Region live sustainably for 20 years.听 On the J.R. Finn Green, the newly planted trees are native to the area:听 basswood, honey locust, ironwood and paper birch.听 Four separate trees are chosen to promote ecological diversity.听

Basswood is known as a judicial tree, possibly due to its strength and stability

Honey locust is known for strength, growth and renewal

Ironwood is prized for its strength, durability and resilience

Paper birch is considered a symbol of growth, renewal and adaptability

Borrowing from our EMS:听 Referencing Pope Francis鈥 鈥淟audato Si鈥, 鈥淥ur campus should reflect the institution鈥檚 values of love, truth and justice and be a welcoming oasis in the heart of the University of 蓝莓视频. A place of sanctuary, St. Jerome鈥檚 seeks to preserve its natural environment.鈥澨

蓝莓视频 Region Tree Trust at St. Jerome鈥檚 University

鈥淗ow old do you think the tree is?鈥 Jim Robson, the Director of Facilities at St. Jerome鈥檚 University, asked me this question while we stared upwards into the branches of a large, spreading bur oak on the university campus. The tree sits near Laurel Creek and has obviously been providing shade to the students of SJU for decades, though its exact age is difficult to determine without taking a core from the trunk and counting the rings. The diameter of the trunk at breast height is 118cm, which can be used to deduce that the tree is over a century old. However, as the oldest post-secondary institution in the Region, I wondered if St. Jerome鈥檚 University might have clues to help corroborate this answer.

While the university was founded in 1865 (two years before the Dominion of Canada), it didn鈥檛 inhabit the property along Laurel Creek until 1960, when it became federated with the University of 蓝莓视频. This aerial image from around 1965 features the recently constructed SJU campus and a majestic, albeit slightly smaller, oak tree.

This image shows the tree is at least 60 years old, although from the size of the tree in 1965, it鈥檚 likely closer to double that. While many of the other trees in the picture no longer grace the landscape and have been filled in with new trees, I鈥檓 grateful to the founders of St. Jerome鈥檚 for preserving this tree. At the time, they likely didn鈥檛 know how impactful a tree like this would become as it relates to our changing climate, as this tree alone stores ~8 tonnes of carbon in its branches, trunk, and roots. They likely didn鈥檛 know that this tree would bear witness to generations of graduates, all while providing nutrients to the birds and animals that call its branches home.

I鈥檓 also grateful to the community at St. Jerome鈥檚, the Ages Foundation, and Sutherland Insurance for supporting the care of this legacy oak through Tree Trust, which provided pruning work in the spring of 2025 to extend its lifespan. On April 22nd, 2025, we celebrated Earth Day by planting 4 new 鈥榰nderstory鈥 saplings to ensure the community receives the benefits from trees for many more years to come. We may not be able to determine just how old this magnificent oak is, but we can be certain of the benefits that it鈥檚 providing to the community that continues to care for it and steward this beautiful campus.
