Sabin Cautis, who graduated with an Honours BMath degree in Pure Mathematics from University of À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ in 2001, has been awarded the 2014 André Aisenstadt Prize by the Centre de recherches mathématiques (CRM). The prize "recognizes outstanding research achievements in pure or applied mathematics by a young Canadian mathematician". Sabin is an assistant professor in Mathematics at the University of British Columbia.

The Department of Pure Mathematics hosted the 2013 Ostrowski Prize presentation on June 10 and 11, 2014. The prize was awarded to Yitang (Tom) Zhang from the University of New Hampshire who presented a lecture on his work on small gaps between prime numbers and was subsequently honored at the prize ceremony.

Congratulations go out to Ken Davidson as the recipient of the 2014 CMS David Borwein Distinguished Career Award.  The award recognizes individuals who "have made a sustained outstanding contribution to the advancement of mathematics."  The full news release from the CMS can be found here:

Pure Math PhD student Stanley Xiao won first place in the Math Faculty heat of the Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) competition. Congratulations, Stanley!

The University-wide finals will be held in the Humanities Theatre on Thursday, March 27 from 2:30 – 4:00 pm. More information about the competition can be found at the 3MT website. Come out and cheer Stanley on!

Pure Math tea attendees were treated to a slice of wonderful Guinness cake made by our own Cam Williams (MMath student) on Monday, March 17th.  What a delicious way to celebrate St. Patrick's Day! Thanks Cam!

Congratulations to PhD alumnus Omar Leon Sanchez for winning the first Murray Martin Prize for the Best Research Paper by a Mathematics Graduate Student! Omar, who graduated with a PhD in Pure Math in 2013, was nominated by his supervisor, Rahim Moosa.
