It is with deep sadness that the University of À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµ must confirm the death of Gabriel Barsky, a student studying Computer Science in the Faculty of Mathematics. Gabriel, known as Gaby, aged 20, died as a result of injuries he sustained while travelling to work for a co-op work term in California on Wednesday, December 2, 2015.

The following memo was distributed to the University of À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµ community on December 3, 2015.

Canadians are responding to the international refugee crisis in ways that reflect our values of freedom, respect for cultural differences, peace and collaboration. I would like to share some initiatives we are supporting across campus as we raise awareness of emerging options.

December 6th is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada. This year will mark the 26th anniversary of the tragic events that took place in 1989 at l'École Polytechnique de Montréal.

President's Remembrance Day message

Feridun Hamdullahpur, president and vice-chancellor of the University of À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµ, released the following message to all students, faculty, and staff on November 11, 2015.

On Remembrance Day, we express our solemn gratitude for those who have given their lives for Canada and for peace. We also celebrate the inheritance of freedom and democracy they have entrusted to us.

On October 19, Canadians stewarded that inheritance from coast to coast to coast.

What stands out for me this month is the richness of the University of À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµ community. From alumni, to future alumni, to donors, to new partners… This place isn’t just an institution — it’s a family.

Building on the success of September’s Orientation events, we celebrated both Convocation and Reunion Weekend this month, and had a terrific turnout for both.
