Researchers in applied mathematics are part of a team developing technologies that use acoustic waves to target and destroy cancerous tumours.

While doctors have used low-intensity ultrasound as a medical imaging tool since the 1950s, experts at the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ are using and extending models that help capture how high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) can work on a cellular level.

Cecilia Cotton from the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Sciences and Martin Pei from the Department of Combinatorics and Optimization have been named winners of this year’s Awards for Distinction in Teaching from the Faculty of Mathematics.

Researchers in applied mathematics have made new discoveries on the hydrology of the Yucatan Peninsula. The research has implications for historical understandings of the Maya civilization, the archaeology of the Yucatan and for present-day climate science as well.

A regional team linked with the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ was named among the winners of the global Technovation Girls app development competition.

But for the second-year PhD student in the Department of Combinatorics and Optimization, the research is fully grounded and relevant. Van Dyk’s research finds practical application for one of the largest companies in the world, Amazon.

Movies are a cultural mirror that shows us who we are. They reflect our values and aspirations, but also our preconceived notions and assumptions. Movies about math and mathematicians are no different.

For example, many movies featuring mathematicians depict them as savants. The stereotypical savant character ranges from quirky genius to troubled outsider to dangerous deviant.
