Prioritizing experience

When Sacha Tihanyi was halfway through an undergraduate economics degree at Laurentian University, he recognized a budding passion for mathematics. 鈥淚 had many broad interests in school, but something flipped for me during that program, and I knew I needed to do a whole different degree focused on math,鈥 he remembered. 鈥淚 chose 蓝莓视频 because it had a reputation as the best mathematics school in Canada.鈥

Making waves

When Chris Salahub learned he could explore his passion for data in a dedicated math faculty at 蓝莓视频, the high schooler had an easy decision to make. Just two years after graduation, when he was on the verge of finishing a master鈥檚 degree in Switzerland, he decided to return for a second degree. 鈥淎bout halfway through my master鈥檚, I realized I wanted to do a PhD,鈥 he remembered. 鈥淚t just made sense to go back to 蓝莓视频 because I had discovered such a supportive community there.鈥

A model of resiliency

Like many first-generation Canadians, Zahra Hirani (BMath鈥94) viewed higher education as a likely path to success after a rocky beginning. Born in Uganda to a family of Asian heritage, she and her parents and sister were forced to flee to Canada as refugees in 1974. 鈥淕rowing up in Ottawa, it was really tough for us to get settled,鈥 she remembered. Her parents emphasized education and she opted to study accounting at the 蓝莓视频 Faculty of Mathematics, in large part because its co-op program would provide financial support in addition to relevant work experience.聽

Lindsey Tulloch鈥檚 passion for computer science began when a close friend convinced her to install Linux on her desktop instead of Windows. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 certainly what got the ball rolling in my software development journey,鈥 she recalled. 鈥淚鈥檝e always been a problem solver鈥擨 enjoy the aspect of working through something and figuring it out on my own.鈥澛

Keshav Chawla has long harboured a passion for computer science and finance. The power of curiosity

鈥淚 like to think I鈥檓 a curious person,鈥 said Jennifer Haid (BMath 鈥04), a native of the 蓝莓视频 Region. When she learned about 蓝莓视频鈥檚 Math Day from her high school math teacher, she decided to attend in hopes of learning about a career path that would leverage her aptitude for mathematics in the business world. 鈥淚 remember watching a professor deliver a presentation about actuarial science and thinking two things: It was challenging, and I could do it,鈥 she shared. 聽
