Celebrating our Past, Building our Future

On the shoulds of giants pics
Mathematicians and computer scientists of today build on the knowledge and discoveries made by those who have come before them. Two such giants in the field were Professor William Tutte and J. Wesley Graham.

This Alumni Weekend, the Faculty of Mathematics will offer alumni, family, and friends an engaging lecture series that will showcase these incredible faculty founders who were ahead of their era, followed by a talk from an alumnus doing cutting edge work in that area.

Schedule:

8:30 am - Dean, Eggs, and Ham: Dean's Notes (DC 1301, Fishbowl)

10:45 am - Entering the Era of Quantum Computing: Challenges and Opportunities (DC 1302)

Presented by Professor Michele Mosca (BMath '95), co-founder of ݮƵ's cryptography centre and the Institute for Quantum Computing, and is a leader in the field of quantum information.

Emerging quantum technologies will change the way that our online information is stored and secured. To be cyber-safe we must be quantum-safe. It’s possible, but we need to start planning now if we want to be ready in time. Quantum-safe cryptography expert Prof. Michele Mosca, co-founder of the Institute for Quantum Computing at the University of ݮƵ, provides insight into the new security challenges that will arise with evolving quantum technologies and what needs to happen to protect ourselves from security threats such as viruses, fraud and identity theft.

Enjoy a delicious buffet luncheon and join alumni from all across campus to celebrate your 25th, 50th or 55th anniversary at this very special celebration! University of ݮƵ President Feridun Hamdullahpur will bring words of welcome and it will be a great chance to reconnect with your classmates and friends.

Alumni from all faculties and colleges are invited to attend.

2:15 pm - Wesley Graham: Father of Computing (DC 1302)

Presented by Professor Kenneth McLaughlin

Join Prof. Kenneth McLaughlin for an engaging one hour lecture focusing on J. Wesley “Wes” Graham, a math professor who is known as the father of computer science at the University of ݮƵ. Graham was an early catalyst for the developments that spurred the growth of ݮƵ as numerous software company spinoffs emerged from the campus.

Because of his immense contributions to the University, in May 2017 Canada’s biggest campus supercomputer, capable of unprecedented data processing installed in the former Red Room, was named Graham.

3:30 pm - From Campus to the Red Carpet (DC 1302)

Presented by Academy Award Winner J.W. Graham Medal recipient, Kim Davidson (MMath ‘81)

Find out more about how a 3D visual-effects software company in the hyper-competitive industry has kept innovating for three decades to win this year’s Oscar for insane special effects by Kim Davidson, President and CEO of SideFX, a company he co-founded in 1987.
