Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) Workshop

The Family Psychology Centre, a private practice in Toronto, offers a two-day Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) workshop for caregivers of youth with mental health challenges. EFFT includes 4 modules that aim to help parents to support their child effectively:

  1. Emotion coaching
  2. Addressing caregiver emotional blocks
  3. Relationship repair through therapeutic apology
  4. Recovery/Behaviour coaching

The purpose of this study is to explore the 12-month trajectories of family functioning, dyadic relationships, mental health, and lifestyle habits within the family system following participation in the EFFT workshop. Caregivers completed self- and parent-report measures about themselves and up to four of their children at six time points:

The results of this study have found that child and caregiver positive coping and caregiver self-efficacy increased, and child mental health problems decreased over the 12 months following the workshop.Ìý
