Thirty years after employment equity programs were first introduced into the academy, this talk provides anÌýunfiltered account of where the academy has succeeded andÌýwhere challenges remain, particularly as it relates to racial justice, disability justice and decolonization. Dr. Malinda Smith will present her latest research and explore where we go from here to achieve equity.
Dr. Malinda S. Smith is a full professor of political science, and a Provost Fellow EDI Policy at the University of Alberta. She teaches in the areas of international and comparative politics, critical race theory, and gender and politics. She is the co-author ofÌýThe Equity Myth: Racialization and Indigeneity at Canadian UniversitiesÌý(2017), co-editor ofÌýStates of Race: Critical Race Feminism for the 21stÌýCenturyÌý(2010) and the forthcoming book,ÌýNuances of Blackness in the Canadian AcademyÌý(2020). Dr. Smith is the recipient of numerous awards and honors including a 2018 Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Fellowship, a 2018-2019 ISA-Canada Distinguished Scholar Award, a 2018 University of Alberta Equity Award, a 2016 HSBC Community Contributor Award, and a 2015 CAUT Equity Award.
