The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) is pleased to announce that Professor Dr. Raafat Mansour has been selected as the recipient of the 2025–2026 Faculty of Engineering Award of Excellence in Graduate Supervision.

This award recognizes faculty members who demonstrate outstanding commitment to mentoring graduate students, fostering academic excellence, and supporting the professional development of future researchers and leaders. Dr. Mansour’s dedication to graduate supervision has had a lasting impact on students across multiple generations, many of whom have gone on to successful careers in academia, industry, and research leadership.

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is proud to announce that Dr. Weiyi (Ian) Shang, has been named a 2025 Distinguished Member by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the world’s leading computing society.

This year, ACM recognized 61 Distinguished Members from leading universities, corporations, and research institutions across 16 countries, honouring individuals for significant technical contributions and impactful service to the computing community. The ACM Distinguished Member designation highlights up to 10 percent of ACM’s global membership, celebrating leaders whose work is shaping the future of technology.

This year, the Canada Research Chairs (CRC) program is investing more than 198 million to support new and renewed Chairholders, with up to 311 million invested annually to attract and retain some of the world’s top research talent. Electrical and computer engineering (ECE) professors Dr. Lan Wei and Dr. Kerstin Dautenhahn have been named new Canada Research Chairs, bringing their cutting-edge work in nanoscale electronics and socially intelligent robotics to the forefront.

Congratulations to the authors of a collaborative research paper, including electrical and computer engineering adjunct associate professor Dr. George Shaker, for receiving a Best Paper Award (second place) in the General Paper Category at the prestigious .

The paper, titled “Radar-Based In-Home Monitoring System for Supporting Aging and Wellness,” presents innovative advancements in the use of radar technology to enable in-home health monitoring, addressing critical challenges faced by aging populations.

On November 28th, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the University of ݮƵ unveiled the future of software engineering with its second Project Showcase for the graduate course Engineering Self-Adaptive Software Systems (ESASS). Led by Dr. Ladan Tahvildari, this innovative course, with support from IBM, integrates cutting-edge industry technologies with research-driven, hands-on learning to tackle real-world challenges in software adaptability.

Congratulations to PhD student Elaheh (Ellie) Sanoubari. Sanoubari won a Best Presentation Award at the International Conference on Social Robotics (ICSR 2024) in Odense, Denmark in October for her work "What Makes an Educational Robot Game Fun? Framework Analysis of Children's Design Ideas.”

University of ݮƵ engineers have achieved that technological feat that will help diabetics to monitor their glucose levels and other people faced with other chronic health problems.

Congratulations to electrical and computer engineering PhD student, Omid Bagheri for winning a Best Student Paper Award (third place) for his work entitled “Radar Antennas Employing a Modified Dielectric GRIN Luneburg Lens” at the 2024 IEEE MTT-S International Conference on Numerical Electromagnetic and Multiphysics Modeling and Optimization (NEMO).

Last week electrical and computer engineering PhD student, Anshul Goyal, and his supervisor, electrical and computer engineering professor, Kankar Bhattacharya, won the Best Poster Award in the Power Engineering Track for a poster Goyal presented for their accepted paper entitled “Impact of Multi-Colored Hydrogen System Participation in Electricity Markets,” at the IEEE Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering 2024 (CCECE).
