ݮƵ welcomes three postdoctoral scholars

The start of the term hustle and bustle brings with it a sense of excitement; especially for threenewѰնDZ,whoarejoiningthe University postdoctoralcommunity. Thethree postdocs joinfour others who began their fellowship in 2020, allfunded by the prestigiousAMTD ݮƵ Global Talent Postdoctoral Fellowship. TheAMTD fellowship program, which provides postdocs with an annual salary of $75,000 plusa$7,500 engagement fund,has beenmade possible by a generous donation from the AMTD Foundation, led by ݮƵ alumnus Calvin Choi (BA ’01). 

“The University continues to be enormously proud of its AMTD program. For the second consecutive year, theAMTD Postdoctoral program attracted an outstanding pool of applicants from which three exceptional scholars were selected to join the University. We are eager to see these two cohorts advance the Program's impact, both individually, and as a community of scholars,"Jeff Casello, associate vice-president, graduate studies and postdoctoral affairssaid.

He goes on to say that “aswe look forward, we are thrilled to announce that next year's program will grow in numbers and in its inclusivity. Once again, Dr. Choi through the AMTD foundation has demonstrated his commitment to the University and our collective goals of advancingequity anddiversity by funding an additional postdoctoral award to support BlackandIndigenousscholars.We thank Dr. Choi for his generosity and acknowledge how this contribution accelerates the important work that continues at ݮƵ in ending systemic racism."

Meet the 2021 recipients of the AMTD ݮƵ Global Talent Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Anwar Jaber

Anwar Jaberis based in the School of Architecture where, withProfessor Robert Jan van Pelt, she’ll pursue research on the role that architecture plays in cities facing political transitions and extreme conditions, focusing on museums that aim to address national narratives of war, memory and violence.Read more about Dr. Jaber’s research.

Ѿ󲹰is a part of the Mechanical and Mechatronics department, working alongside ProfessorArashArami, to advance the medical community’s capacity to engage intelligent robots and biofeedback in developing affordable and accessible technology to support the rehabilitation of stroke patients in Canada.Read more about Dr.Nazarahari’sresearch.

Chad Walker

Chad Walker conducts interdisciplinary research investigating how Smart Local Energy Systems (SLES)—projects that combine smart technology with sustainable, local energy production and management—can create just and inclusive clean energy systems. Chad will work withProfessor Ian Rowlands in the School of Environment, Resources and Sustainability.Read more about Dr. Walker’s research.

The AMTD 2022 application process has now launched.Applicants to the AMTD Fellowship must have the support from a University of ݮƵ researcher; the application deadline is November 18, 2021.This program is intended to be the premier award for postdocs in Canada, and the support reflects this goal. The AMTD fellowship has an annual salary of $75,000 plus $7,500 engagement fund, plus access to additional dissemination fund. These values exceed the Tri-Agency Banting levels of support. As mentioned in the President’s memo yesterday, the House of Commonsrecentlypassedabill creating a federal statutory holiday onSeptember 30called the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation notably coincides withOrange Shirt Day, a daywhen we honour the Indigenous children who were sent away to residential schools in Canada. While Ontario is not recognizing this holiday as a statutory holiday, ݮƵ is recognizing this as an official day of observance. Many events and learning opportunities are planned to support National Day for Truth and Reconciliationand we look forward to welcoming the campus community and beyond to engage, reflect, and learn with us.

In partnership with the Indigenous Initiatives Office, W Store is pleased to support the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30. The UݮƵ community can show their support by purchasing an Indigenous-designed and -sourced Every Child Matters t-shirt.

“The purchase of a t-shirt is one of the many ways people can show support to Truth and Reconciliation efforts, help raise awareness, encourage knowledge building, and directly support Indigenous students attending the University of ݮƵ.We are thankful for the great support and considerate partnership with Print + Retail Solutions,” says Senior Director, Indigenous InitiativesJean Becker(acting as interim Associate Vice-President, Human Rights, Equity & Inclusion).

Memengwaans Ireland is the artist who designed the t-shirt, which was both sourced and printed by Rezonance Printing in London, Ontario. For more information about the artist behind the design, please visit. Rezonance Printing is an award-winning mentorship program that focuses on printing as a means of economic sovereignty for Indigenous artists. Rezonance Printing supports Indigenous artists like Memengwaans, who was a recent participant in their youth internship program in 2019.

W Store will be donating $10 from every t-shirt purchased to support the Indigenous Student Success Fund on campus.

“We in Print + Retail Solutions take ݮƵ’s Indigenization strategy very seriously,” says Ryan Jacobs, director of the Print + Retail Solutions department. “We are thrilled to be able to support this new fund.”

The Indigenous Student Success Fund was established to provide financial assistance to Indigenous students, who are most at risk for abandoning their education due to financial hardship. Funds received will be used to support students with:

  • Tuition and fees not covered by scholarships, financial aid or grants
  • Testing fees
  • Tools and other school supplies
  • Emergency housing and heating costs
  • Emergency childcare expenses
  • Emergency transportation
  • Other unforeseen emergency expenses barring students from degree completion

T-shirts can be purchased in-store at W Store | Gifts + Apparel located in South Campus Hall or online at. Due to worldwide shortages and high demand, W Store will be capping orders at 10 per person or department.
