Is My Internet Service Sufficient for Online Use ?

Generally if your internet download and upload speeds are 3 Mbps or greater and your latency is less than 100 ms you can particiapte in most online activities to U À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ. Most people with goodÌýinternet service and within 9000 km of À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ will have this level of service. Students in China and the far east areÌýoutside this 9000 km radius and experience restricted internet access issues. Therefore UW has obtained for students studying in China to help alleviate these issues.Ìý

To test your internet speeds and latency visit and confirm that your upload, download speeds and latency are suffcient for the activities below. To test your latency to UÀ¶Ý®ÊÓƵ visit .Ìý

Occasionally your tested speed and latency are substantially less than the service level agreement with your Internet service provider. In this case we recommend that you try each of the following to restore your internet service levels and try the tests again:Ìý

1. Ensure all other unnecessary users of your home internet service are not watching videos are participating in online games.
2. Ensure all operating system updates are applied and restart the computer.
3. Restart you home router and Internet service provider modem.

If these attempts fail to restore expected speeds and latency then contact your Internet service provider to assist you with restoring your service level. ÌýÌý

Downloading Recorded Lectures

Most instructors will be using Webex to record lectures and will provide links in Learn or email to you for the download sites. If receive links from your instructor for Webex videos click the link and sign in to Webex using your @uwaterloo.ca credentials, click the Recordings section then highlight the recording you want to download and then click the download button. Then download theÌý standalone to watch the videos. If you receive links to .mp4 videos then you can install VLC player to view these.Ìý

Downloading, Installing and Web Services for Course SoftwareÌý

Aspen and Matlab are required software for the Fall 2021Ìýcourses in Chemical Engineering. If there is other software you require for your course send email to dherman@uwaterloo.ca for information about how to download the software you require.Ìý

If you are unable to use Matlab and Aspen on the Remote Desktop serversÌý via the Online Resources section above due to poor Internet service then you can download and install and use them using the following instructions. To use Aspen and Matlab on your PC you must be connected to the campus network via Eduroam or via theÌýUW VPN service.

Aspen

Prerequisites

Windows 10 computer. Linux or Apple users must use cheterm1.uwaterloo.ca or a Windows 10 virtual machine to install and use Aspen.

How to Download and InstallÌý

1. ÌýConnect to the UW VPN serviceÌý
2. ÌýUse Windows to map the file share \\chefile.uwaterloo.ca\studentshare
   1. ÌýWhen prompted for your credentials specify them as Nexus\userid where userid is your Watiam/Nexus ID.Ìý
3. ÌýCopy/paste the file aspen12install.zip from that file share to a folder or desktop on your home PC.Ìý
4. ÌýRight click the aspen12install.zip file and select Extract allÌý
5. ÌýOpen the created aspen12Ìýfolder and double click installaspen12.1.cmdÌýfile to install Aspen 12 and except all defaults.

Notes : This is a large file 6+ GB to download and install. Download times at 100Mbps internet speeds are 20-30 min. Installation times are 10-30Ìýminutes depending on computer performance.Ìý

Matlab

To download or use MATLAB online:

1. ÌýGo to the .
2. Ìý Click 'Sign in to get started' under the Get MATLAB and Simulink section.Ìý
   1. If you have an existing MathWorks account (set up with your uwaterloo.ca email), use your userid@uwaterloo.ca email address to log in.
   2. If you do not have an existing MathWorks account, or your MathWorks account was not set up with a userid@uwaterloo.ca email address, create an account using your @uwaterloo.ca email address.
3. Ìý Ìý Once your account is set up, you will be linked to our MATLAB license and will be able to:
   1. ÌýDownload and activate software on your personal computer.
   2. ÌýStart using MATLAB Online from a Web browser without installing anything.
