Scholarly Research

i) Carbon Management of Energy Production Systems: My students and I have made major advances in developing cost-effective region-wide CO2 mitigation strategies that will aid in finding solutions for CO2 capture, additional treatment, transportation, and storage. Since no single technology can meet this ultimate energy challenge of the future on its own, we used a system approach that can provide insight and data on the viability of an energy production pathway. A diverse number of energy sources were taken into account including biomass, hydroelectric, wind, solar, natural gas, coal, and nuclear energy. We proposed optimal solutions to effectively account for sustainability and lower greenhouse gas emissions, while meeting growing energy demands. The novelty of our approach is that it dealt with a multi-region, multi-technology decision framework that is based upon a bottom-up view of industrial activities and a top-down view of energy and other product demands. We also successfully investigated novel approaches of carbon management such as conversion to useful products and the hydrogen economy. Our work won best paper awards at several international. Our industrial partners (mainly OPG and to a lesser extent Bruce Power) are using these research findings in order to improve their production operations with respect to CO2 mitigation. Several of our papers were featured on the research spotlight page of WISE (Ŕ¶Ý®ĘÓƵ Institute of Sustainable Energy). Our work in the area of power to gas has been attracting the attention of several industrial collaborators (e.g., Hydrogenics Corporation, Canadian Gas Association, Union Gas Limited, GE Digital Energy, Enbridge Gas Distribution Inc.) and was also recently featured on the research page of WISE in a spotlight entitled: “Power-to-gas systems: The economics of green energy storage". As evidence of the growing international stature of my research team in this area, I was invited by the International Institute for Carbon-Neutral Energy Research at Kyushu University (I2CNER) – Japan to conduct a seminar and a three-day short course on our research contributions. ii) Environmentally Conscious Process Planning and Scheduling: We successfully prepared mathematical programming models and solution strategies for the selection and planning of pollution reduction options. These models offer the appropriate scheme for evaluating and ranking available pollution control technologies. They were helpful in selecting a set of pollution reduction measures while at the same time minimizing total investment and operating costs. These models can also answer the question of how to adapt an already implemented pollution reduction strategy to changing situations. The models were successfully applied to power generation, petroleum refineries, and the cement industry. iii) Sustainable Production Pathways: The quest for pollution prevention and increased pressure and demand for environmentally sustainable processes and products have been creating new rules in the process industry. Sustainability is defined as “economic development that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. We developed a set of preliminary indices to assess sustainability of a chemical process and incorporated them into a planning model for the development of the petrochemical industry. An important characteristic of the petrochemical industry is its flexibility. For the production of many petrochemicals different transformations can be used, each involving different combination of feedstocks and co-products. Our modeling framework represented the industry as a large network of several hundreds of chemicals and processes. The model was able to account for the different interactions, needs, and features and at the same time provided suitable mathematical representation. From the superstructure of the technology alternatives, the model was able to select an optimal set of processes with the objective function of sustainability. The model was later supplemented with strategic tools in the form of the Boston Consulting Group growth matrix and the General Electric (GE)/McKinsey matrix in order to direct the industry to products with good growth potential. iv) Modeling and Optimization of Complex Systems: We prepared models and solution algorithms to deal with the operation and design of complex systems (single and interconnected). The applications we considered ranged from traditional operations to systems biology, to pollution problems. We developed a novel methodology based on combining dimensional, inspectional, and order of magnitude analysis in order to model complex processes. This has proven very useful in optimizing various processes whose models have been traditionally too large and run times too long to allow for rigorous optimal solutions. We were able to account for the synergistic effects that arise from complex interactions of several variables that affect the behavior of a given system. Our methodology for the optimization of air quality monitoring networks was applied to an existing network of refinery stacks and proved useful in improving the ability of the refinery personnel to monitor and protect environmental resources and human health. This work was featured in the Technical Insights (Frost & Sullivan) and appeared at the top of the list of articles published on the same topic since its publication (BioMedLib, July 2013). Some of our articles in this theme of research also appeared in the list of “Top Hottest” articles by Science. v) Pollution Monitoring: To take appropriate actions to minimize pollution, the “right” information with respect to environmental violations must be supplied. We took two complementary approaches to predict pollutants’ concentrations due to the activities of process operations: An empirical (e.g. Artificial Neural Network, ANN) approach and a mechanistic approach. We were able to account for the synergistic effects that arise from complex interactions of several variables that affect atmospheric dispersion. Our models provided reliable estimates of emission rates based on only limited information. A new methodology for the optimization of air quality monitoring networks was also developed. This methodology was applied to an existing network of refinery stacks and proved useful in improving the ability of the refinery personnel to monitor and protect environmental resources and human health. vi) Process and Enterprise-Wide Integration: In the area of integration, we addressed problems both at the process level and enterprise-wide. We proposed a novel superstructure and associated global optimization algorithm for the design of integrated water-systems that combine water using and water treating units, and which also allows for the selection of different treatment technologies. We also proposed a simultaneous optimization strategy for the overall integration of refinery planning and hydrogen management. As for enterprise-wide integration, we developed mathematical programming models of the energy demands and greenhouse gas emissions for the Canadian oil sands industry. Recently, we addressed the design and analysis of appropriate coordination strategies and planning of capacity expansion within a network of petroleum refineries through mixed integer programming and tested our approach on several case studies to illustrate the economic potential and trade-offs involved in the optimization of the network. vii) Optimal Product Design: We have been developing systematic methodologies for product formulations for a wide number of applications. In the area of biotechnology, we developed a new systematic approach to identify the key amino acids in a medium and optimize their concentrations. Medium development and optimization were accomplished by combining an alternative statistical design known as mixture design with distance-based multivariate analysis. This new approach reduced the number of required experiments dramatically. The technique is generic, yet simple in concept. As an unexpected benefit, the optimized medium obviated any concern about peptidases that compromised human interleukin-3 (hIL-3) authenticity in peptone containing medium previously. One of our papers in this area was selected to be on the spotlight feature of the journal Biotechnology and Bioengineering. This research has been instrumental in helping our industrial partner (Cangene) to conform to guidelines by regulatory authorities regarding animal by-products and to replace peptone with an essential amino acid mixture in the medium for producing recombinant hIL-3 by Streptomyces lividans host. Another project we have undertaken in the area of product design was in collaboration with Virox Technologies Inc. and dealt with disinfectant formulations. As a result of our efforts on designing a green product disinfectant, our collaborating company received the Design for the Environment Champion Status Award (this is the highest level of recognition offered under the Safer Detergents Stewardship Initiative, SDSI). Recently, in collaboration with Prof. Simon, we have developed novel Natural Plant Fiber (NPF) plastic composite products in an effort to integrate renewable resources in material production. A product formulation methodology based on mixture design and design of experiments was developed and illustrated on a case study that uses wheat straw and polyethylene as the thermoplastic polymer matrix. Response surface models were prepared and used to simulate and optimize the composition formulation of the composite which meets targeted product specifications. Optimization of the composite ingredients to maximize the wheat straw utilization in the final composite while minimizing the material overall cost was also carried out. The results have been proven to be of great benefit to the automotive industry. We are currently focusing on the integration of nanotechnology to enhance material properties. Two broad applications we are undertaking will deal with the 1) development of graphene-based coatings for corrosion-inhibition of metals surfaces, and 2) development of nanofluids to enhance the thermal properties and efficiency of heat transfer devices. Such composites that incorporate the use of nanotechnology are emerging novel materials that have found very attractive properties and applications. Product formulation has often been overlooked in the drive to develop and commercialize novel nanotechnology products. However, the development of optimal formulations is an essential step to ensure appropriate performance in the end-use application. In generic terms, the product formulation design problem can be defined as: given a set of desired (target) needs, determine a chemical product (molecule or mixture) that satisfies these needs. This problem can therefore be looked at as a reverse property prediction, or inverse optimization problem where the needs are defined through product properties. In this way, a product design problem is connected to, and simultaneously solved with process-product problem to create new products that satisfy market needs. Contributions to Collaborative Research: Collaborations with other colleagues on topics of mutual interest bring together different areas of expertise and points of view – something that is very important in addressing research questions. These collaborations in turn contribute towards increased synergy and effectiveness in coming up with meaningful and impactful solutions to difficult yet significant challenges. This leads to higher quality manuscripts and publications, which serve to document and disseminate the obtained findings for the benefit of society at large. In addition to working directly with graduate students, postdoctoral researchers and undergraduate students, I have close partnerships with my departmental colleagues at the University of Ŕ¶Ý®ĘÓƵ, other institutions in Canada and around the world. In order to apply our research findings, we also collaborate with industrial partners in Canada and elsewhere. I have also co-advised, or I am currently co-advising a number of graduate students with many of my departmental colleagues. My contributions have mainly revolved around providing expertise and guidance in the area of process modeling, simulation, and optimization. This is reflected in the order of authors in the published manuscripts, which in most cases, is directly related to the contribution of each participating author. An author can contribute in the form of the research ideas, in performing the computational or experimental work, in collecting real plant data related to the project, and finally in writing up the manuscript. The assessment of overall contribution has not been trivial; especially in the case of more than two authors. In such cases, the order has often been in the reverse order of seniority of the researchers since participating research students have mostly been named as first authors. Starting 2020, I decided to be listed as last author regardless of contribution. The thinking behind this is because I am often the most senior author in my research collaborations, and I serve as the mentor or supervisor of the project. My contributions in the collaborative projects vary depending on the nature of the project. For example, in my joint work with Emeritus Professors Jeno Scharer and Moo-Young on medium design and optimization, my contribution has been in providing expert opinion in mixture design and optimization techniques; especially parameter estimation methods. With Professor Michael Fowler, my contributions have similarly again been to provide a "systems approach" way of thinking to the projects. As well, I have gained a lot from Professor Fowler’s knowledge on hydrogen production pathways and life cycle analysis. With my background of specialization, I have been able to translate his knowledge into mathematical models that have been helpful in assessing and analyzing hydrogen production pathways. Professor Peter L. Douglas, despite us being in the same area of research, demonstrates a different flavor of thinking that leans towards the applied side of the field of research. This has contributed tremendously towards making our research on carbon dioxide management and mitigation more applied to the electricity generation sector in Canada. We have been working very closely with our industrial partners (e.g., the Ontario Power Generation or OPG) and have been conducting regular meetings with them to ensure that what we are doing finds a direct implementation in their commercial plants. I have found these meetings to be most useful in fine-tuning the mathematical models that I have developed, particularly in terms of formulating the right constraints, and finally, in tailoring the implementation of the solution algorithms to the speed and efficiency that they require in their daily operations. I have involved Prof. Ricardez-Sandoval, Prof. Chandra Madhuranthakam and Prof. Qinqin Zhu (recent hires to our department at the time of collaboration) in the co-supervision of few of my students. This effort was aimed at providing mentorship to younger colleagues. I worked on distributed MPC when I was a visiting professor at the University of Wisconsin. I decided to co-supervise a PhD student in this area in collaboration with Prof. Budman who offered expertise in MPC and robust control while I offered expertise in optimization, equilibrium models, and system decomposition.
