Thirty-five teams of fourth-year Chemical Engineering students shared the results of their Capstone Design project with fellow classmates, faculty, family and friends at this year’s Capstone Design Symposium in Engineering 6 on March 11, 2019.

The Symposium was an exciting conclusion to the past two years they have spent researching and attempting to solve some of the challenges our world faces. Each team conceptualized and designed a solution to a problem of their choice.

The Department of Chemical Engineering’s hosted its Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition on February 28^th. The enthusiasm of the students – in the audience and at the podium – showed why this exciting event remains so popular.

University Professor, University of À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ

This weekend, on Friday, October 26 and Saturday, October 27, more than 20,000 recent graduates will return to campus to participate in the University of À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ’s 117th convocation. Among them will be 39 recent graduates of the Department of Chemical Engineering’s undergraduate and graduate programs.

A team from the University of À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ’s department of Chemical Engineering earned second place in the '²õÌý. The award was announced during the U.S. Department of Energy’s Annual Merit Review in Washington, DC.

This international competition included 27 teams from around the world, all working to design a Power-to-Gas system for cross market uses, including energy storage, ancillary services and transportation fuel. The winning À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ team, comprised of students Sami Barbouti, Ehsan Haghi, Ushnik Mukherjee, Nick Preston, Hassan Riaz, Peter Tang and Javan Wang, was mentored by Professor Michael Fowler and Dr. Azadeh Maroufmashat.

CHE MASc candidate Kien Manh has been awarded the prestigious Iron Ring Graduate Scholarship to support his Master’s research. Kien Manh, who will be studying under the supervision of Professor Michael Fowler, was selected from among many applicants from all departments within the Faculty of Engineering.

Congratulations to the 172 Chemical Engineering graduates who, after many years of inquisitive thought, dedicated study, and impressive self-discipline, received their official diplomas at the University of À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ’s Spring Convocation on Saturday, June 16th, 2018.

Professor of chemical engineering Costas Tzoganakis and University of À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ startup are poised to change the way the world handles its scrap tires. Judging by their recent collection of awards, their innovative, sustainable technology is getting noticed.

A big congratulations to PhD candidate Gregory Lui for his exciting achievements at the . He made UÀ¶Ý®ÊÓƵ and the department of Chemical Engineering proud with his engaging and informative summary of his photocatalysis research. The 3MT judges and audience were impressed too – he headed back to À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ with a second place finish and the People’s Choice award.

While the fourth-year Capstone Design project is often regarded as the culmination of the knowledge and experience gained over the course of an undergrad degree, some students think of it as a new beginning rather than an end. Consider, for example, fourth-year chemical engineering students Kien Tran, Jack Anderson, Skylar Bone and Olsi Goxhaj, aka Green Sorbs. They have taken their Capstone Design project, an environmentally responsible, non-mechanical method of oil spill recovery, beyond the 2018 Capstone Design Symposium to a series of competitions. And their efforts have been recognized and applauded.
