Wednesday, January 6, 2021

With deep sadness, we announce the death of second-year Chemical Engineering student MihirRodrigues, who passed away from a heart-related issue on December 29th, 2020, while he was at home in India.

Mihir began his undergraduate studies with a University of ݮƵ President’s Scholarship of Distinction that recognized his outstanding academic achievement. He loved his time at ݮƵ and, likewise, he was a valued classmate and an important part of our program. We can take comfort in knowing that Mihir was home with his family in the days before his passing.

A family service was held for Mihir on December 31.

On Friday, January 8, 2021, the University’s flags will be flown at half-mast in Mihir’s memory and at 5 pm (EST) the Department of Chemical Engineering will host an online memorial event to celebrate the time Mihirspent with us at University of ݮƵ.

The department is collecting condolences for Mihir’s family. If you would like to send them a message, please email it to chemeng.undergrad.admin@uwaterloo.ca.

As Dean of Engineering Mary Wells expressed so well in her letter to the Faculty, “Death can be difficult for us to understand, especially when it is sudden. Many of us may be confronted with a variety of emotions, which might include shock, sadness and confusion.”
