Rumours abound about "students today" and, more locally, about "À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµ students." This session provides an overview of learning and learners generally, and also more specifically at À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµ. The information provided will allow you to better plan your teaching in light of learner characteristics, generally and at À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµ.
Course Dynamics and EngagementÌý(CTE9906)Ìý

What will you do when a student arrives late to your class? Dominates a discussion? Tells you that your course is much harder than all their other courses? These are everyday issues that all faculty member experience. In this workshop, you will become aware of issues common to the teaching environment (whether in class or online) and how they influence class dynamics, and you will work to devise strategies to handle these issues. We will also consider the impacts of the potential strategies developed in terms of learner motivation and engagement.
Assessment as LearningÌý(CTE9912)Ìý

How do we know students know and can do new things as a result of our courses and assignments? How will they know what they have learned and to what level? In this session, we will examine how assessment decisions are made in the context of course objectives and constrained by class size and grading time allotted. We will address principles of feedback and evaluation of student work as well as practical implementation advice. Participants will leave with the knowledge required to start an assessment plan for a course or assignment, and how to approach assessments as opportunities for learning.Ìý
