You too have the potential to produce art almost as good as the greats, if only you look in the right places. It doesn鈥檛 matter that no one鈥檚 listening.

Planning

At the drop-ins, I often have people coming who are in the beginning of the writing process. They have often run into issues when writing, such as running out of ideas, unclear writing, or weak arguments. Their mistake? They simply overlooked one important part of the writing process: planning.

As any writer knows, you need to plan out what you鈥檙e writing in order for it to be effective. Planning out your writing allows you to develop stronger arguments and be clearer in presenting them 鈥 both of which are essential to writing a successful university-level assignment.

The timing isn鈥檛 right, or you don鈥檛 have enough time to get enough of your thoughts down, or you need to perform your pre-writing rituals like binge-watching The Wire or cleaning the kitchen. Everyone is different, but the problem remains the same. Where to begin?

Choosing a Topic

I鈥檓 hungry (I鈥檓 always hungry), so I think about the options I have. It鈥檚 a bit overwhelming: Should I cook or should I buy? Should I eat a lot or should I just snack? Is there even food in the fridge (and by this, I mean is there anything I want in the fridge)?

(My hair is too long, I need a haircut)
