Affordable Energy For Humanity Initiative
TheAffordable Energy for Humanity Global Change Initiative is an emerging international collaboration between the world's leading scientists, technology developers and practitioners on the topic of universal energy access. Our vision is to deliver the next generation technologies, innovations and practical solutions that will drive the costs of energy services to a level low enough for a revolution in energy access without the need for tax incentives and subsidies. Participants in this initiative are guided by a common purpose to apply their skills, expertise and knowledge to the urgent cause of improving the affordability of clean energy in contexts where it matters the most. Harnessing the resources and enthusiasm of researchers in order to change the energy access equation is the primary inspiration behind the initiative. Opinion: Canada’s relationship with the United States will ensure continuity and many policies will remain the same for now.
Opinion: Ontarians and all Canadians need tangible economic benefits from “Greening” including the creation of jobs in high value added activities. Lessons in program design from the Ontario Green Energy Act (2006) need to be recognized; and a legislative framework adopted that will facilitate dynamic innovation and technological change.
Rather than specify them (e.g. targets on electric vehicles) in advance, or favor particular methods (e.g. solar), the law should enable entrepreneurs to home-in on methods and means that broadly reduce GHGs at low costs per tonne – even if it means continued use of hydrocarbon fuels for some time, such as natural gas replacing coal and transportation fuels.
Opinion: Oil and gas interests can lead and advocate for reduction of GHGs by transforming how hydrocarbons are used with new, lower GHG strategies.
