Title:
The California Electric Grid and the Energy Transition
Abstract:
The California electric grid is undergoing a major energy transition, moving away from conventional generation toward renewable and clean energy sources. By 2045, California aims to meet 100% of its electricity demand with clean energy. This transition presents significant technical challenges in efficiently integrating new technologies while maintaining reliable grid operations at minimal cost. It has introduced new operational challenges that require innovative, market-driven solutions. These challenges have been further exacerbated by extreme weather events. This lecture provides an overview of the current status of the California grid and outlines the ongoing operational challenges associated with integrating renewable resources, energy storage, and behind-the-meter generation. It also explains the suite of market solutions developed by CAISO to address these challenges, including new market products designed to manage uncertainty, meet the demand for flexible and ramping capacity, and optimize the use of energy-limited resources.
