With the quantum age on the horizon, scientists are working to develop quantum computers that will have a processing speed exponentially faster than today’s most advanced supercomputer. Building a useful quantum computer is one of the great engineering challenges of our time. In all implementations, qubits that are reliable, stable, and scalable are essential in this endeavour. 

Energy is present everywhere in the universe, from the tiniest particles to the vastness of space. According to quantum mechanics, vacuum states like outer space are not actually empty, because when observed at microscopic scales, there are spontaneous energy fluctuations. 

The University of ��ݮ��Ƶ’s Co-operative and Experiential Education (CEE) announced the winners of the annual award for co-op students today in a hybrid in-person and virtual ceremony. Welcoming Ukrainian refugees, supporting out-of-this-world discoveries and shaping Canada's future in space are just a few of the many achievements of the 2022 Co-op Students of the Year.

Water has many unique properties. An interdisciplinary team of ��ݮ��Ƶ scientists has discovered a one-dimensional chain of water molecules could produce a quantum phase transition. This breakthrough is a key development for future water-based quantum devices.

Duality is the incredible “two-in-one” combo of physics. Whenever two aspects of nature – electricity and magnetism, particles and waves, the field theory of particles and the theory of gravity – can be mathematically connected, new and unified theories of nature can emerge. But research collaborations can be powerful dualities in themselves.

February 11th marks the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015, the annual event promotes full and equal access and participation of women in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Professor Melanie Campbell is known for developing improved understanding of the eye’s optics and high-resolution imaging of the retina at the rear of the eye. Currently she is developing light-activated treatments for eye disease and non-invasive imaging techniques for the detection of Alzheimer's disease at University of ��ݮ��Ƶ, Canada. Professor Campbell was the first woman to graduate with a PhD in applied mathematics from Australian National University (ANU).

Physics undergraduate student Sarah Rourke was named a finalist for the first global cohort of McCall MacBain Scholars for her academic strength, community involvement and character. The scholarships provide a life-changing opportunity for students who have a track record of contributing to their communities and a genuine desire to make a positive impact.

The Quantum Horizons: Quantum Information Science (QIS) Research and Innovation for Nuclear Science Award from the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Nuclear Physics has enabled a new collaboration between researchers who develop technologies for nuclear physics, quantum information science and high-energy physics. 

Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs has announced the 25 finalists for the 2022-2023 GRADflix competition year, which includes seven finalists from the Faculty of Science.
