At the Faculty of Science, we are constantly inspired by the remarkable women in our faculty and their determination to make a difference through science. Continue reading to learn more about their stories, what inspiring inclusion means to them, and their advice for emerging young scientists. 

Professor Dale Martin's research lab is a recipient of a $125,000 . This grant program, dedicated to advancing amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) research, encourages out-of-the-box ideas in the field.  

Thanks to the donors of the Chemistry Program Activation Fund, students now have access to a widely applicable instrument, Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR), to study DNA binding.

Together with the School of Optometry and Vision Science and the School of Pharmacy, 350 donors raised over $175,000 that will support our science initiatives. Whether supporting the SCI of Relief Fund, the À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ Eye Institute, or the Pharmacy Student Support Fund, know that your donations go a long way in assisting our students in receiving innovative education and achieving academic excellence.

Three years ago, history was made when the first image of a black hole inspired wonder and awe around the world as we glimpsed the shadow of light escaping from the supermassive black hole M87*. Today, history is being made again as the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) Collaboration releases the image of a second black hole — Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) — the one at the centre of our own Milky Way galaxy.

Past and present members of the Faculty of Science community are saddened by the news that William David Taylor passed away on January 24, 2022. Bill had a long and distinguished career of service inside and outside the University of À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ. He will be remembered with great affection by the many professionals that he trained as students, and by the many colleagues who had the pleasure to work with him in research and administration.

For Michael Houston, PhD ’93, BSc ’87, the University of À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ is more than his alma mater. For a good chunk of his youth, the campus is where he called home.
