Christopher McMahon

Post-Doctoral Fellow

Christopher joined the Hawthorn group in 2010 after obtaining his BSc in physics from Wilfrid Laurier University. He has been heavily involved in expanding the group’s experimental expertise, both in their lab on the UW campus and at various accelerator facilities across North America. His MSc thesis focused on the development of an inverse photoemission spectrometer and related ultra-high vacuum apparatus designed to perform experiments on strongly-correlated materials never before done in the field. Now obtaining his PhD, Chris examines the electronic structure of high-TcÌýsuperconductors and other quantum materials, with emphasis on investigating their peculiar charge- and spin-density wave ground states. His studies have provided him with extensive experience performing a multitude of modern techniques in experimental physics.

Previous experiments involved such notable techniques as inverse photoemission spectroscopy (IPES), x-ray diffraction (XRD), low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), resonant soft x-ray scattering (RSXS), and photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM). He frequently visits several beamlines at the Canadian Light Source (CLS) synchrotron in Saskatoon (,Ìý,Ìý,Ìý, andÌý), as well as the recently commissioned free electron laser facility () at Stanford’s Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) in California where he has performed x-ray experiments on electron dynamics with femtosecond timing.
