That morning coffee might be even more helpful than you think.

In the first study of its kind to explore caffeine’s effects on dynamic visual skills, researchers from À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ's School of Optometry & Vision Science and the University of Granada have concluded that caffeine increases alertness and detection accuracy for moving targets. Caffeine also improved participants’ reaction times.

The University of À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ’s global hub for eye and vision research is taking on some of vision science’s most pressing challenges through five strategic research programs aimed to generate technologies to prevent vision loss and preserve healthy vision.

This year for Giving Tuesday, UWOVS is back with another exciting donor challenge!

When $10,000 in gifts have been made to the À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ Eye Institute Fund, an extra $5,000 will be unlocked, thanks to the generosity of our challenge champions Dan Langlois and Tracey Webb. Join us on Tuesday, November 30 to #helppeoplesee.

UWOVS ranked 5th in the world

The University of À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ’s School of Optometry and Vision Science is amongst the top optometry schools in the world, according to one of the field’s top scientific journals.

In a pre-pandemic world, the School of Optometry & Vision Science’s Witer Learning Resource Centre (WLRC) was open for students whenever they needed it. Students regularly would come and go – freely using the carols for quiet study time, checking out publications, or gathering for study groups to prep for their exams.

But when COVID-19 hit, there was a sudden need for additional layers of safety pre-cautions that would change how freely students would be able to interact with the WLRC.

Pivoting quickly, the WLRC team (Mirka Freemantle, Peter Stirling, Janine Solis Solis and Brie McConnell) worked together to ensure access could continue for Optometry students - including implementing an electronic sign-up system to manage capacity requirements in all spaces, digitizing the library's collection, executing regular sanitation protocols and coordinating resource requests.

À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ partners with The Hong Kong Polytechnic University to launch the first international research hub for eye and vision research.

In recognition of Canada's inaugural National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, School director Dr. Stanley Woo met with Dr. Paul Chris, Chair of the Federation of Optometric Regulatory Authorities of Canada (FORAC), to receive a framed copy of FORAC’s Declaration of Commitment. This declaration has been endorsed by all provincial optometric Colleges across Canada.
