Professor Lorne Dawson听(Department of Sociology and Legal Studies, University of 蓝莓视频) is one of Canada鈥檚 leading experts on religious extremism and the process of radicalization that can lead to violence. He is co-director of the Canadian Network for Research on Terrorism, Security and Society (TSAS). He will speak about what we know about radicalization in this country and why some people become violent extremists.
Professor Veronica Kitchen听(Department of Political Science, University of 蓝莓视频) is an expert on counter-terrorism institutions, which include government, police, military, and intelligence bodies, with a particular focus on urban security and its impact on public space and civil liberties. Also affiliated with TSAS, she will speak about proposed new legislation and Canada鈥檚 security response to recent threats of terrorism.
Professor Amarnath Amarasingam听(Resilience Research Centre,听Dalhouse University) is a SSHRC Post-Doctoral Fellow whose expertise includes transnational activism, surveillance, social movements, radicalization, and terrorism. He will speak about the recent phenomenon of individuals who have gone overseas to fight in various conflicts, drawing from his interviews with foreign fighters as well as with their families and social circles.
