MSE students earned multiple awards at the 2025 Canadian Operational Research Society (CORS) Conference in Edmonton.Ìý À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ students received Bronze Level Recognition, while undergraduates Matthew Chan, Adel Pazoki, Aniq Premji, Sunischit Thapa, and Larissa Troper were runners-up in the national Student Paper Competition.

Individual accolades went to Esma Akgun and Mina Torabi Milani, both earning runner-up awards for their research.

A paper by a team of Management Science and Engineering researchers recently received an Honorable Mention (Top 4 Finalist) at the prestigious POMS College of Healthcare Operations Management (CHOM) Best Paper Award.ÌýThe paper addresses the challenge of hospital-acquired Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), which affects approximately 20,000 Canadians annually.

A paper co-authored by Management Science and Engineering professor Lukasz Golab and his Data Science Master’s student Anastasiia Avksientieva at the .Ìý This paper proposed a new data-driven method to assess bias in machine learning models.Ìý A model is explicitly biased if it is more accurate for some subgroups than others.Ìý For example, a biased healthcare model might generate more accurate diagnoses for younger or older individuals.Ìý However, even an explicitly unbiased model may be implicitly biased if it is harder for some subgroups to flip the model's decision to a favourable one.Ìý For example, what if married individuals whose loan applications were rejected would only need to increase their incomes by an average of ten percent to be approved, but single individuals would need 20 percent higher salaries?  In their paper, Golab and co-authors present a software tool that identifies implicit bias in prediction models, toward responsible deployment of AI models in practice.

Management Sciences professors Samir Elhedhli, Fatma Gzara, and Mehrdad Pirnia were recently featured in an informative event that delivered practical insights for industry on the application of artificial intelligence to address supply chain challenges.

Dr. Kourosh Malek, a Management Sciences PhD alumnus and currently Head of AI and Data Analytics at Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH was also a featured panelist.Ìý

This year, along with most other things around the world, our Management Sciences Annual Spring Awards ceremony was abruptly put on hold due to the covid-19 global crisis.

A management engineering Capstone Design project that explored the need for pay-and-display parking machines in Toronto took top prize in an international competition.ÌýMilan Preet Kaur, a recent management engineering graduate, presented her team’s Capstone project at the 2019  (INFORMS) Undergraduate Operations Research Prize Competition, which took place at the 

Molly Beckel, a graduate of the 2013 management engineering class was recently honoured with a 2018 Young Women in Energy award. Molly works as a Facilities Integrity and Reliability engineer for the TransCanada Corporation. She is active in the energy industry and serves as Calgary Chapter Chair for the Young Pipeliners Association of Canada, a pipeline advocacy group.Ìý

FEM in STEM, founded by first year Management Engineering student Mylene Tu, was one of four early-stage À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ student-run startup winners in the Velocity $5K competition.

Umair Shah, a lecturer in the Department of Management Sciences has adopted an innovative approach to bridge the ‘industry-academe’ divide by piloting the use of the   platform at the University of À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ.

A new study co-authored by Management Sciences Professor Lukasz Golab found that coupling bikeshare with public transit could help increase light rail transit (LRT) ridership.
