Tamara Van Staden, LEAP student, successfully defended her MSc thesis today titled "Phosphorus Legacies and Water Quality Risks: A Vulnerability-Based Framework in Southern Ontario". Tamara completed her MSc research under the supervision of Philippe Van Cappellen and her advisory committee, Nandita Basu and Chris Parsons.
Congratulations, Tamara!
A perspective paper published in the journal Freshwater Science, co-authored by LEAP researcher Philippe Van Cappellen, outlines the main knowledge gaps and uncertainties facing the remediation of eutrophication and associated harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie.
The held its Soil and Water Information Day in Guelph on November 20. The 655+ CCAs in Ontario provide information and expertise on crop production, crop protection and natural resource management to farmers. The Association regularly offers workshops and professional training to its members.

A special session on legacy effects of nutrients will be held at the in San Francisco in December 2019. ‘A Race Against Time: Legacy Effects of Land Use on Water Quality, Watershed Processes and Ecosystem Function’ will showcase research examining how human activity has shaped patterns in sediments, nutrients, and contaminants in the landscape over time. This session focuses on how the effects of agriculture, resource extraction, and urbanization influence water quality, watershed processes and ecosystem function over decades to centuries.
LEAP members attended the University of ݮƵ Research Spotlight at the . This event provided an opportunity to share water research happening in the Grand River watershed with local water managers and decision makers.
Søren Bøye Olsen gave a presentation titled “Eye tracking as a pre-test method in questionnaire-based stated preference surveys - Developing and applying guidelines” at the 8th annual at University of Verona, Italy. This presentation was based on Tobias Holmsgaard Larsen’s MSc thesis work in the LEAP project.
Tobias Holmsgaard Larsen defended his MSc thesis titled “Eye tracking as a pre-test method in questionnaire-based stated preference surveys surveys: A provision and test of guidelines for analysis of eye tracking data”. In his thesis work, Tobias developed and tested a first version of the LEAP Choice Experiment questionnaire which will later, upon further development, be used for full-scale data collection in the four LEAP exemplar sites.
As part of ,Nandita Basu gave a public lecture at the titled ‘Protecting Our Water’. Community members and students shared the space to learn about the impacts of nutrient pollution and algal blooms, and how we can work to mitigate these effects.
