They investigated net anthropogenic nitrogen inputs to the Lower Mondego watershed in Portugal, finding greatest nitrogen inputs in agricultural areas of the watershed, and lowest nitrogen inputs in forested areas. Nitrogen in the watershed was increasing in the 1980s and 1990s, but has been declining in the 2000s and 2010s. This trend is attributed to declining agricultural production and livestock in the watershed.
