WATERLOO, Ont. (Friday, April 24, 2015) 鈥擳he falling apples of Newtonian physics to the amazing and counterintuitive phenomena of the quantum realm will take centre stage when the Kitchener-蓝莓视频 Symphony (KWS) and the University of 蓝莓视频鈥檚 Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) present their innovative musical experiment next month.
The performance of Quantum: Music at the Frontier of Science will take place on Sunday, May 3 at 2:00 pm at the National Arts Centre (NAC) in Ottawa is part of the Ontario Scene Festival. Edwin Outwater, music director of KWS and conductor of Quantum, and Professor Raymond Laflamme, executive director of IQC, will co-host the concert. Ann Baggley, actress and assistant director with the Stratford Festival and Shaw Festival, will narrate.
鈥淢usic and science are not as different as some people might think,鈥 said Professor Laflamme. 鈥淭hey both help us understand and interpret our world and ourselves. This concert shows how music and science are two sides of the same coin.鈥
Both fields followed surprisingly parallel paths: they were governed by order and logic during the Enlightenment, both saw a breakdown of tradition in the early 1900s, and both saw the emergence of challenging new rules and paradigms throughout the 20th Century.

The musical program ranges from well-known pieces by Mozart and Webern to radical, rarely performed pieces by Xenakis, Brant, Ives and Cage.
