A description of the spin-spin interaction from Quantum Electrodynamics

²ú²âÌýTales Rick Perche

When implementing entangling operations in two quantum systems, it is usual to consider interactions prescribed by Hamiltonians that directly couple the different systems (e.g. the J-coupling). On the other hand, a fundamental description of these systems using quantum field theory is entirely local, which forbids coupling disjoint systems directly.

In this talk we will discuss how a fully quantum field theoretic treatment of electrons in atoms gives rise to the spin-spin interaction, focusing on the assumptions necessary to reach the effective J-coupling model and the corrections that arise in this more detailed description.
