
The birch bark canoe that is displayed in the cabinet represents the interconnectedness of Indigenous traditions, engineering and craftmanship. The birch bark canoe was traditionally the principal means of water transportation. Birch bark is an ideal material for canoes due to the resilient yet light and waterproof nature of the bark. Although the canoe displayed in the cabinet is a small version, the canoes constructed by Indigenous people showcased incredible engineering and understanding of nature.
