Building on her success in teaching in SERS, Christine brings a passion for student-centric, field-based, experiential learning to the role. It is exciting to think about how her initiatives will enrich curriculum development and pedagogy on campus.

Congratulations to Lowine Hill and Madu Galappaththi for their recognition as SERS student achievement leaders. Lowine and Madu (in collaboration with planning student Sarah Ghorpade) established a unique program for the Faculty of Environment that focuses on critical reflections on the colonial aspects of sustainability research.
In light of the meeting of the Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD) and negotiations around post-2020 global conservation targets, there is renewed attention on the need to assess and apply novel conservation policy tools. One of these tools is referred to as ‘Other Effective area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs)’. 25 experts representing 26 institutions and 14 countries recently published a paper in that assesses for the first time the core opportunities and challenges of OECMS to address the biodiversity crisis. Indigenous scholar Assistant Professor Kelsey Leonard has been named SERS’ second Canada Research Chair.With global warming now raising sea levels, Leonard’s position as Chair in Indigenous Waters, Climate and Sustainability will help her explore ways of facilitating Indigenous Knowledge to restore our threatened ocean, lakes and rivers, while asserting Indigenous sovereignty. We are pleased to announce that the School of Environment, Resources and Sustainability will be participating in the Green Office program starting Spring 2021. The GO program seeks to reduce natural resource consumption in workspaces, fight climate change, and promote sustainable living through engagement in activities. The Green Office program will be a way for SERS faculty and staff to show their care for the environment within their workspaces on a day-to-day basis.
The University of À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ’s School of Environment, Resources and Sustainability is launching the SERS Mentorship Program this spring term. The program’s goal is to provide SERS students with the opportunity to receive advice and support from their peers, and to gain insights from upper year students and environmental practitioners. Sessions will cover an array of topics including co-op placement success, graduate school opportunities, securing entry-level jobs, and career options.
