New Year, New Room, Same Old FemPhys: A Look at Winter 2025

FemPhys kicked off 2025 with a much-needed update to our club room layout, revealing space none of us thought we had. One new coffee machine and some twinkle lights later, we were ready for business to open up our club room (PHY 104) – a safe space where people of all genders and marginalized identities within Physics (and related fields) can come to socialize or simply grab a cup of tea or coffee while groaning through exponentially growing mountains of homework. fem

This semester we collaborated with the Chemistry Graduate Students’ Society (CGSS) on the 2025 edition of IUPAC’s annual Global Women’s Breakfast, featuring a panel of women across the Physics and Chemistry departments. We joined our lovely friends at CGSS once again to welcome Dr. Andre Issacs, a Professor of Organic Chemistry and well-known social media personality, to the University of À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ to engage in discussions about equity initiatives in STEM.

The winter term also has one of FemPhys’ most beloved events – our annual Mentoring Night, in collaboration with the Institute of Quantum Computing (IQC) and the Department of Physics and Astronomy’s Committee for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. Mentoring Night brings together students and mentors in STEM from across academia and industry to discuss the many paths life can take beyond university, speed-dating style! This year, FemPhys welcomed fifteen mentors and a little over fifty students as they engaged in an evening of lively conversation and discussion followed by a dinner. FemPhys is grateful for all the mentors and students that attended, without whom the event would not be possible.

Each term, FemPhys aims to host engaging events to bring together students from across Physics and related fields, while promoting our core values of inclusivity and feminism within STEM communities. The summer of 2025 will mark eleven years of FemPhys, and we look forward to continuing our long-established tradition of fostering a diverse and inclusive environment for men, women, and nonbinary individuals within Physics. Cheers to a great term, and we can’t wait for the next one!Â
