Resource Responsibilities

Innovation for Responsible Mining is an in-class workshop designed to introduce students to the mining industry in Canada, environmental concerns associated with mining and current research into mine site remediation. The workshop, aimed at students in grades 7 through 10, includes

  • four hands-on activities,
  • three videos about Earth science careers (featuring active university staff and students!) and
  • a take home field guide for every student.

The workshop is designed to meet the science and geography learning expectations for each grade and be accessible regardless of your classes baseline knowledge of mining processes.

The program materials are loaned out and shipped to your classroom at no charge to you for your students to enjoy! Technology services are available for classes without access to video viewing technology.

Policy on Program Kit Late and Damage Fees

Late Fees

  • If you fail to return the kit on time your school will be invoiced $50 per week that the kit is overdue. There are limited numbers of kits available and other teachers may be inconvenienced if you do not return the kit on time.
  • Any outstanding invoices will result in your school not being allowed to book visits or other outreach materials until the balance is paid.

Damage/ Replacement Fees

  • If the kit arrives damaged or is damaged while you’re using it, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us: we expect some wear and tear, and we can attend to it better if you let us know. If it is determined that the kit was damaged willfully, the cost of repairs will be assessed and discussed with your school.
  • If you do not return the kit, your school will be invoiced the full replacement cost of the kit, $750 to $3225 depending on what was included in the materials list.
  • Any outstanding invoices will result in your school not being allowed to book visits or other outreach materials until the balance is paid.
Our Policy on Rural Addresses

We use Purolator to ship our outreach kits across Canada. Unfortunately, this service has a limited reach and may not be able to directly deliver to your address in a rural area. You may be required to pick up and/or drop off an outreach kit from the nearest Purolator/Canada Post depot to your location if that is the case.

Please familiarize yourself with the closest depot locations if you live in a rural area to ensure you can accommodate this arrangement BEFORE booking an outreach kit

If you have any questions regarding rural address locations, please contact earthmuseum@uwaterloo.ca.
