Effective May 1, 2005, in accordance with the 2003 Faculty Salary Settlement, the University of ݮƵ established an Outstanding Performance Fund to reward faculty members for outstanding contribution in teaching and scholarship.
Statement on wildfires and health risks
Due to ongoing forest fires in northeastern Ontario and Quebec, ݮƵ Region’s air quality is currently being impacted. Environment Canada has issued athat is expected to remain in place for the rest of this week.
Generally, people with lung or heart disease, older adults, children, pregnant people, and people who work outdoors are at higher risk of experiencing health effects caused by wildfire smoke. If you experience symptoms such as shortness of breath, wheezing, asthma attacks, severe cough, dizziness or chest pains, you should move inside into an air-conditioned space.

Get Real is a Canadian non-profit focused on combatting 2SLGBTQ+ discrimination, racism, and bullying in schools, summer camps, and workplaces. They accomplish this by offering a variety of different educational workshop modules and by providing leadership development and marginalized youth support through University Chapters, High School After-School Programs, and 2SLGBTQ+ Virtual Counselling Programs. The programming aims to break down prejudice, promote unity, and foster compassion in our world.

Seedling swap a serious success
A message from the Sustainability Office.
On May 17, the Sustainability Office hosted its first ever Seedling Swap. In preparation for the spring growing season, ݮƵ community members were invited to bring nonperishable food donations or their extra seedlings to swap for new ones.
The swap aimed to engage and educate the community on gardening and local food systems. Around 150 seedlings were swapped, and included a wide variety of vegetables, wildflowers, and houseplants. In addition, 80 food items were donated to WUSA Food Support to help address food insecurity on campus.
Due to the popularity of the event, the Sustainability Office now plans to host more swaps in the future! Stay in the loop for more seedling swaps, as well as other events to support nature and biodiversity, with the Sustainability Office'sǰ. The Sustainability Office also hostedtree plantingsat the end of the month on May 30 and 31.

Speaking of social impact, from the latest issue of theݮƵ Engineering Alumni Letter e-newsletter (eWEAL)dza story about a student leader-turned-mentor uses her voice and time to help others succeed.
"ݮƵ Engineering alumnus Amy Charette (BASc ’94, mechanical engineering) was going to be an astrophysicist. Her ambition shifted gears on the day she met her first ever mechanical engineer through her highschool’s astronomy co-op program.
“I can’t remember her name – yes, the first mechanical engineer I happened to meet was a woman,” says Charette. “But I hung onto her every word and just knew that mechanical engineering was what I wanted to do.”
"On December 6, 1989, during Charette’s first term, 14 women – most of whom were engineering students – were murdered at the École Polytechnique de Montréal in an antifeminist mass shooting. This horrific event prompted ݮƵ to pay closer attention to its women engineering students to ensure their safety and comfort and led to the formation of the Women in Engineering (WiE) committee.
As a member of WiE, Charette recalls the committee needing students who could speak up openly and directly about how women experience traditionally men-dominated events and environments – as well as confidently discuss possible solutions with University leaders to make these spaces on campus more inclusive. It was a role she was only too happy to take on.
“I wasn’t just an engineering student,” says Charette. “I was a young woman with a voice and I used it to invite others to share theirs too and feel safe doing so.”
