Prof recognized with top civil engineering honour

A national engineering society has recognized a À¶Ý®ÊÓÆµ Engineering professor for his outstanding contributions to civil engineering research, innovation and leadership.

Dr. Hassan Baaj, a civil engineering professor and associate dean of research and external partnerships, was named a Fellow of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE) at the organization’s 2025 annual conference gala in Winnipeg, held May 28 to 30.

Election to CSCE Fellowship is one of the society’s highest honours, recognizing members who demonstrate excellence in practice and make lasting contributions to the profession.

Baaj, who also holds the Norman W. McLeod Chair in Sustainable Pavement Engineering and directs the Centre for Pavement and Transportation Technology, was honoured for his international leadership in transportation infrastructure research and his contributions to technical committees that shape the field. His research explores sustainable and smart infrastructure materials, self-healing asphalt and 3D-printed concrete.

He has chaired major national and international committees, including RILEM’s Technical Committee on Crack Healing of Asphalt and the Transportation Association of Canada's Soils and Materials Standing Committee.

Baaj also serves as associate editor for both the Canadian Journal of Civil Engineering and the Journal of Transportation Engineering, and sits on multiple international editorial boards.
