Recent extreme heat in ��ݮ��Ƶ Region has caused sidewalks to buckle due to thermal expansion of concrete. Dr. Pejoohan Tavassoti, a civil engineering professor at the University of ��ݮ��Ƶ, explains that the damage is caused by thermal expansion, where concrete expands in extreme heat and lacks space to move.��

“Normally, joints in the structure allow for this movement,” he explains. “But with rapid or prolonged heat, the pressure can build up and force the concrete to lift.”

As climate extremes become more common, Tavassoti and many other experts are researching ways to make infrastructure more resilient through improved design and materials.
