Heterotheca villosa var. villosa

Heterotheca villosaÌý±¹²¹°ù.Ìývillosa is the typical variety of the species and has more-hairy, less glandular leaves. It occurs at both diploid (2n=18) and tetraploid levels (2n=36).  It occurs across the northern Great Plains into the Rocky Mts. to British Columbia, Washington, and northern Oregon. In the northeastern part of the range it can be similar to var. ballardii.

Nesom (2020) placed plants from the central and western portion of the range into H. hirsuta (Greene) Nesom which has prominent capitular bracts, conspicuous sessile glands and relatively reduced non-glandular vestiture.  Nesom (2020) placed some plants from far western part of the range in British Columbia, Washington, Idaho, and northern Oregon into Het. vespertina Nesom which lacks capitula bracts, has broader involucres, and fewer ray florets.
