Heterotheca stenophyllaÌý±¹²¹°ù.Ìýangustifolia (Rydb.) Semple has grayish green leaves covered in strigose hairs and few or new stalked glands. It is the more widely distributed variety in the species and is mostly tetraploid (Semple 2008).

Nesom (2020) treated var. angustifolia as H. angustifolia (Rydb.) Nesom and V. Harms treated it as a variety in H. villosa.
