The collective was formed in 2020 alongside protests for the reinvigorated Black Lives Matter movement and the global COVID-19 pandemic. DMU is a Black-, Indigenous-, and people of color-led network representing a design justice movement within academia and built environment practitioners who converged to address longstanding, structural racism present in the design fields and education. 

School of Architecture alum Victor Zagabe (BAS '16, MArch '20) is a core organizer in the collective and contributed to several pieces in the issue.
