Abstract:

Howcan regionalism and modern building practices synthesize to develop a localizedbuilding culture? While regionally conscientious modern architecture demandsefficiency, sustainable resource equilibriummay be the ultimate goal ofvernacular architecture. Local building culture blends the vernacular andmodernism, engaging local resources and building culture in architecture. Locallabor economies and buildingresources are influenced directly by thearchitect, where architecture aggregates in a sustainable and robust buildingculture. The objective of this thesis is to investigate the middle ground wherethe aspects ofvernacular and modern architecture collide.

A site in Hants County, Nova Scotia is thelocation for an off-grid farm. Instead of an architecture that circumventslocality, with local building culture, design is a process of regionaldiscovery. Usingphotography to document the regional architecture, the designdevelops a context for an architectural project. Through the experiences gatheredon site and throughout the area, architectural ideals that areregionallyconscientious manifest themselves. By engaging a local building culture, thedialogue between landscape and structure becomes continuous, never meant tostagnate or become static.
